Icehawks Fly Past PrairieThunder, 4-2

BLOOMINGTON, IL - Led by Derek Patrosso, who had two goals and an assist, the Port Huron Icehawks continued their dominance over the Bloomington Prairie Thunder at U.S. Cellular Coliseum with a 4-2 win on Wednesday night. The victory gives the Icehawks an undefeated 11-0-3 record at Bloomington dating back to February of 2008.

The win also moves Port Huron (23-8-0-1) back into sole possession of first place in the IHL, two points ahead of the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Larry Sterling made 37 saves to pick up his eighth straight victory. He stopped nine of ten shots in the third period after Jon Booras scored his second goal of the game at 1:55 of the third period to close the gap to 4-2 for Port Huron. Brett Holmberg and Matt Frick assisted the goal. Port Huron had four shots in the period at Andrew Martin.

A Tab Lardner power play goal at 5:07 of the second period gave Port Huron a 3-1 lead in the game. Brandon Naurato and Patrosso assisted on the play, which ended in a two-against-the goalie break to the net. Patrosso put in his own rebound at 16:52 of the period for his second goal of the night making it 4-1 for Port Huron. Pete Rouleau had the lone assist. Shots were 14-10 for the Thunder in the second period, which featured a fight between Port Huron's Rob Cowan and Bloomington's Robin Gomez at 5:33.

Kerry Bowman opened the scoring just 2:36 into the game, putting in a rebound to the left of the crease. Jason Selleke and Daniel Tetrault had assists on the play. Just 1:02 later Patrosso extended the lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the night off a wrap-around chance. The unassisted goal came at 3:38 of the first.

Bloomington broke into the scoring column with 22 seconds left in the period on a Booras goal. Brett Holmberg and Justin Sawyer had assists at 19:38. Shots favored Bloomington 15-10 in the opening period. Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling made 14 saves, while the Thunder's Andrew Martin made eight stops. Bloomington outshot Port Huron 39-24 in the game.

Port Huron continues a five game road trip on Friday with a game in Quad City, before returning to Bloomington for another shot at the PrairieThunder on Saturday.
