Icehawks Announce Affiliation With Detroit Hitmen
September 11, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League are proud to announce that they have entered into a working agreement with the Detroit Hitmen of the All American Hockey League. The affiliation will aid the development of players and give the Icehawks access to the Hitmen roster.
The Hitmen kick off their inaugural season in October at Great Lakes Sports City in Fraser, Michigan.
"This affiliation allows us the opportunity to see some younger players develop," Head Coach and General Manager Stan Drulia said. "There is a time every season when we run into injuries. We will obviously be looking for players at that time and with the Hitmen just down the road from us, it makes great sense."
"I personally will attend some of their games and see how their players are progressing if such a need does arise," he added. "I think the relationship will grow and hopefully benefit both teams and all of our fans and players."
Hitmen Head Coach/Director of Operations Matt Wiedenhoeft will also be in attendance at the Icehawks Free Agent Camp at McMorran Arena September 18-20 and will offer his input.
"We are very pleased to work out an agreement with a successful team in the IHL," Wiedenhoeft said. "This relationship should help both teams along the way this year. We are looking forward to working with Stan and the rest of the organization throughout the season."
The Icehawks become the fourth International Hockey League team to enter into a working agreement with an AAHL team this off-season. The Fort Wayne Komets have affiliated with the Evansville IceMen, the Muskegon Lumberjacks have affiliated with the Battle Creek Revolution and the Dayton Gems reached an agreement with the Chi-Town Shooters.
The Icehawks open the 2009-10 season at home on Saturday, October 17 versus the Fort Wayne Komets. Season tickets are on sale now and are more affordable than ever. For more information and the 2009-10 schedule, call 810-966-3800 or visit www.porthuronicehawks.com.
