IceDogs Eat-Up Wolves

Niagara IceDogs News Release

Andrew Shaw led the IceDogs in an exceptional battle where Niagara took a 5-2 game against the Sudbury Wolves in front of a 3,648 crowd Saturday night.

Andrew Fritsh opened the scoring and continued his hot-streak with an early goal off a nice backhand pass from Alex Frisen.

Niagara followed up halfway through the first when Dylan MacEachern backhanded one past Wolves goaltender Alain Valiquette to make the score 2-0 in favour of the IceDogs.

The Dogs would not let up as Freddie Hamilton capitalized on a power play opportunity by diving to tap in the puck off an Andrew Fritsh rebound. Frisen also tallied an assist to pick up his second point of the game.

Niagara was a perfect 4 for 4 on the penalty kill in the first, and IceDogs net-minder John Chartrand stopped 7 shots to give the Dogs a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The IceDogs kept the pressure on in the second as Andrew Shaw took a stretch pass from Shayne Rover and pulled a highlight-reel toe-drag to beat Valiquette and extend Niagara's lead to 4-0.

The IceDogs would not allow Sudbury to record a short on goal in the second period until the 10:17 mark.

The Wolves broke Chartrand's shutout as Marcus Foligno scored on a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 18:44 mark of the second. Sudbury cut the IceDog lead in half less than a minute later, giving the game a 4-2 score after two periods.

Mike McCourt must have given quite the speech in between periods, as the IceDogs came out strong in the third and Andrew Shaw netted his second goal of the game to give the Dogs some early third period momentum.

Shaw, along with Fritsh, has also continued his exceptional play as of late by notching 4 points in the last two games.

The IceDogs kept up the solid play defensivley and gave the Wolves a tough physical battle throughout the remainder of the game, allowing Niagara to triumph with a much needed win.

The IceDogs next game will take place at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday, January 7, as they host Tyler Seguin and the Plymouth Whales with the puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this and all other IceDogs home games can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location.
