Alpena IceDiggers News Release

Alpena MI: In what was a penalty filled game the Alpena IceDiggers came away with a 7-6 victory over the SOO Thunderbirds (NOJHL) tonight at The John Rhodes Community Center in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. Alpena converted on 6 of the 9 power plays chances they had, while the host team chipped in 4 power play goals on 15 chances.

The IceDiggers got into penalty trouble early and had to battle back to take the lead after forty minutes of play. "We were flat in the first period and because of that we took some undisciplined penalties, our team was much better in the 2nd and 3rd." Stated head coach Kenny Miller. "We have a ways to go, but I know we will get better with each game."

Alpena MI native Erik Peterson was one of the many driving forces behind the offense tonight scoring 2 goals and adding 2 helpers. Defensemen Ben Kitzmiller (Lambertville MI) added 2 goals while Zach Barron (St. Louis MO) scored his 3rd goal of the preseason and also added an assist. Chris Hendrickson (Hancock MI) and Austin Seiple (Maumee OH) each scored a goal and had one assist.

The IceDiggers were able to stay undefeated in preseason play, but as Miller added there is room for improvement. "We need to work on several things at practice tomorrow and execute them in our last preseason game Friday, the showcase is right around the corner and we have to be ready for that, because that will show us where we stand against the elite teams in our league."

Eric Roman (West Bloomfield MI) and Chad Billins (Marysville MI) each had 3 assists in the win, while assistant captain Ricardo Yesue (Allen Park MI) got his name on the game sheet with an assist on Zach Barron's power play goal.

Brandon Stephenson (Saline MI) was between the pipes tonight and came away with the victory making 28 saves while allowing 6 goals.

The IceDiggers return to Northern Lights Arena to take on these same SOO Thunderbirds on Friday evening at 7:00PM. Tickets will be available at the door for $3.00 each and season ticket holders will be admitted for FREE.
