Indiana Ice News Release
Less than 24 hours after dismantling the Youngstown Phantoms goaltending in their first shutout of the season, the Indiana Ice escaped with a 5-4 dogfight victory on Saturday from the Covelli Centre.
Jason Salvaggio (2G), Patrick Newell (2A) and Scott Conway (G, A) both walked away with two points while Mitch Hults and Aidan Muir also recorded tallies on the night.
With 24 saves on the contest, Jason Pawloski secured his eighth consecutive win while moving up to third among league backstoppers in wins (14).
Indy's fourth-ranked road penalty killing unit had a rough night as all four of Youngstown's lamps came on the man advantage, including two in the third period by Maxim Letunov.
For the second time in as many nights, the middle frame proved bountiful to the Ice as three of their five goals would come in the middle 20 minutes. Salvaggio's first of the night came less than one minute into the second when Newell's cross-crease pass found Salvaggio for the glove-side redirect.
Still reeling from Friday's NHL.com-worthy strike, Muir extended his goal streak to three games after picking up and burying his own rebound to take a 3-1 lead early in the middle stanza. Hults would provide Indy's lone power play goal of the night to extend the lead to 4-2 going into the third period.
Letunov proved to be a bit pesky for the Indy goaltending as Youngstown's leading goal scorer against Indy would try to dig his team out of the 4-2 deficit. His efforts were unsuccessful as Salvaggio's empty netter with 95 seconds left on the clock sealed the Ice's fifth consecutive win.
Indy looks to add two more standings points to their Eastern Conference lead as they host the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Monday, December 30 for the annual "Ring in the New Year" event from Bankers Life Fieldhouse, sponsored by Reis Nichols Jewelers. One lucky fan will have the opportunity to win a free piece of jewelry, courtesy of Reis Nichols.
Fans with an "A" on their report card can also present them at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse box office to receive one free youth ticket for Monday's game. Call the Indiana Ice office at (317) 925-4423 for more information.
