IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES: It was a tale of two very different games last weekend as the Indiana Ice and the Green Bay Gamblers faced off in back-to-back contests from Pan Am Pavilion. A second-period surge by Patrick Newell (2G) and solid goaltending by Hayden Stewart propelled Indy to a 1-0 lead in the series following Friday's 2-0 win over visiting Green Bay. Four goals in the third period wasn't enough to save the Ice on Saturday as the Gamblers capitalized on three power play opportunities en route to a 6-5 victory to tie the series. Sam Kurker's four points (G, 3A) in the period spearheaded the effort while Matt Roy (2G), Mike Preston (2A) and Jacob Pritchard (2A) added multiple points on the night. Patrick Newell and Aidan Muir aided in the scoring department with one goal each.
I GOT FOUR ON IT: Sam Kurker fell only a single point shy of making his mark in Ice playoff history as the first-year winger recorded four points (G, 3A) in the third period of Saturday's 6-5 loss to Green Bay from Pan Am Pavilion. The St. Louis Blues prospect first assisted on Matt Roy's laser beam from the point before potting a goal of his own midway through the period. Kurker then collaborated on the final two goals, both in the final 90 seconds of the game.
"reNEWELLed": Forward Patrick Newell has been putting his sniper's eye to good use as the St. Cloud State-commit is riding a five-game point and three-game goal streak, dating back to the regular season. Through the stretch, Newell has recorded eight points (4G, 4A), including four goals in his past three games. He is currently tied for first in the USHL with three playoff goals in two games.
PLAYER SPRINGS: Matt Roy recorded his first multiple-goal game on Saturday and is second among league D-men in postseason goals...Scott Conway is riding a five-game point streak with nine points (6G, 3A) in the stretch...Hayden Stewart is one of three Ice goaltenders to record a post-season shutout (Brett Bennett-5/6/09 vs. FAR, Jon Gilles-5/3/12 at GRB) and has the USHL's only postseason shutout.
TEAM BOUNCES: Indy fired a league postseason-high 16 first-period shots on Saturday...The Ice leads the postseason in shots against per game (21.50)...Indy has not yet scored a goal in the first period, but has outscored opponents 4-2 in the third frame...Indy scored a league playoff-high four third period goals...The Ice has outshot opponents 27-15 in the third period...Indy is tied for the least amount of postseason penalty minutes (16)
PLAYOFF HAPPENING: Eastern Conference: Dubuque (#2 seed) and Cedar Rapids (#3 seed) split back-to-back contests over the weekend to even the series at 1-1....Western Conference...Waterloo (#1 seed) holds a 2-0 advantage over Sioux Falls (#4 seed) while Sioux City (#3 seed) is one game away from a 3-0 upset sweep of Omaha (#2 seed).
