The Indiana Ice opened their preseason with a matchup against the Chicago Steel on Thursday at Pan Am Plaza.
The Steel scored unanswered goals in the first and third periods to capture a 5-3 decision.
Indiana and Chicago each scored three goals in the second period.
Viktor Shakhvorostov scored the first goal of the Indy preseason with helpers from Marley Keca and Robbie Baillargeon. His goal came two minutes into the second stanza and evened the count at one-all.
Zach Aman potted the Ice' second score at 9:14 of the stanza just after the hosts killed a Chicago powerplay. Aman pounded home a rebound of this own shot at 9:14 with assists from Drew Smolcynski and Brian Morgan.
Smolcynski went from assist-man to goal-scorer at the 12:12 mark after Mikhail Plotnikov head-manned a pass to the crease of visiting netminder Alex Sakellaropoulos. His score evened the score at 3-3 but the Steel regained the
lead 25 seconds later to carry a 4-3 advantage into the final 20 minutes.
Mattias Soderqvist stopped 28 shots in goal during his preseason debut.
Indiana Ice Fall Classic action continues on Friday when the Steel faceoff with the Muskegon Lumberjacks from Pan Am Plaza before the Ice host the Lumberjacks on Saturday. Admission for both games is free with the contests beginning at 7:05 pm.
