Whalers Drop 4th Straight, Dayton Wins 6-2
The Danbury Whalers had won all 3 meetings between themselves and the Dayton Demonz leading up to tonight, but the Whalers have been on a downturn as of late, falling from 1st to 3rd place after losing 4 of 5 games since last weekend. With a couple players back this weekend, Danbury looked to turn things around, but could not, and Dayton, with a little puck luck on their side, took advantage and downed the Whalers
In the 1st period, Dayton scored the only goal, from Jared Hicks after faking out the defense and sniping it top shelf. Nonetheless, Mike Brown and Matt Kinsella had good periods of play in goal. The Whalers got their break 7 minutes into the 2nd when Ian DeLong cashed in on a nice pass to the front of the net to tie the game, and then the conspiracy play took place. At the 15 minute mark, Rob Dongara took a pass in front and sniped the shot upstairs on Matt Kinsella, the goal horn went off and the net moved, however the official, who did not see the shot, kept play going, and seconds later, Ahmed Mahfouz scored on Mike Brown to give Dayton the lead instead. It would only get from bad to worse, as 22 seconds later, Jay Pietrasiak made it 3-1. With the wind knocked out of their sails the Whalers bad luck continued. 5 minutes into the 3rd period, Jordan Ciccarello, playing the puck from his own blue line, fell down with 2 Demonz approaching. Jared Hicks took the puck and roofed it for his 2nd goal of the game. Danbury's last gasp came on a power play halfway through the 3rd, when Micky Knox was in the right place in the right time to bury a puck into a wide open net to make it 4-2. However Jared Hicks was having a night to remember, and completed the hat trick with 5 minutes to go, followed by a Lester Brown empty net goal to finish off the scoring, but not before things got crazy. Jordan Ciccarello was taken down by Roger Tagoona and Mark Rivera and a penalty was upcoming. Julian Fraser proceeded to go after Rivera, sending him down on the ice, then sending Tagoona on his rear, then taking down Brian Marks to boot. Tagoona, fresh up on his skates, charged Fraser and after a fight at center ice, Tagoona, doing his best John Wensick impersonation (Look up John Wensick and the Minnesota North Stars on Youtube) went straight for the Whalers bench, and took on Ryan Devine, who was standing at the bench and prevented his entry into the Danbury bench. All 3 players would be ejected from the game with Tagoona earning 22 PIM and a game misconduct.
For the Danbury Whalers, Micky Knox had a goal and assist and Ian DeLong had a goal, and Mike Brown stopped 30 of 35 shots. For the Dayton Demonz, Jared Hicks had 3 goals and an assist, Lester Brown and Ahmed Mahfouz had a goal and assist each, Jay Pietrasiak added a goal and Seth Ronsberg finished the night with 3 assists. Matt Kinsella stopped 31 of 33 shots for the victory.
The Danbury Whalers and Dayton Demonz play once again tomorrow night at 5pm and will play again next Friday in Dayton before Danbury heads to Port Huron in the FHL's Neutral Site game at McMorran Place Arena. 2,134 fans packed into Danbury Arena for this Saturday Night matchup.
