Demonz Get a Second Opportunity to Play Danbury for the Federal Hockey League Championship
(Dayton, Ohio) For the second straight year the Dayton Demonz will play for the Federal Hockey League's Commissioner's Cup again against the Danbury Whalers. With tonight's hard fought win over the Watertown Privateers 5-1 the Demonz left right immediately after the game to Danbury Connecticut for their 12 hour bus ride to face the Whalers in the first game of the finals, which will be played tomorrow evening.
Demonz coach Trevor Karasiewicz stated the team played their best period of hockey in the first period as the Demonz controlled the period start to finish taking a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. A relentless fore-check by the Demonz forwards, and over-all strong defensive play made it a rough go for the Privateers as Dayton fired 20 shots at the Watertown net, while the Privateers had only 5 shots at the Demonz net.
Jason Pietrasiak scored the Demonz first goal just under mid-way through the period. Jared Hicks added a goal 3 minutes later to give Dayton a 2-0 lead. Ahmed Mahfouz would score the next two goals for the Demonz before the first intermission giving Dayton a 4-0 lead. Dayton's quick start and strong work ethic was critical in the first period. Dayton did not want to get into a "punching match" exchanging goals with Watertown, like they did in their loss to the Privateers in Thursday night's loss to the skilled Privateers. Tonight they kept their foot on the gas pedal, never letting the Privateers skilled forwards to create time and space, and generate many scoring opportunities.
The second period became ugly at times, as both teams became overly aggressive throughout the middle frame. In a period that seemed to never end and delayed with many stoppages from a combination of roughing, charging and fighting penalties called, especially at the end of the play.
Britt Ouellette of the Privateers scored the lone goal of the period to cut the score to 4-1. Watertown would outshoot Dayton in middle-period 15-12. With Dayton's strong defensive play and solid goaltending by Demonz goaltender Matthew Kinsella, Ouellette goal proved to be the only goal for the Privateers in the game.
The 3rd period Ahmed Mahfouz goal made it final 5-1 Dayton. His goal netted him the hat trick. Mahfouz finished the game with a five point night, adding 2 assists to his hat trick.
Watertown Privateer player coach Kris McCarthy stated after the game "no one expected us to win a game in this series, I am really proud of my teammates and the effort they gave not only in this series but through the season, I am sad to see the season end." McCarthy sincerely went on to say, he appreciated their fans (back in Watertown) for all their support" a season he will always remember.
