Whalers Eliminate Dashers, Win 5-2
The Danville Dashers and Danbury Whalers met for the 18th time this season with the Dashers gasping for a playoff position, while the Whalers were looking to keep up with the Dayton Demonz as the two teams battle for first place. The Whalers started the game with a bang as Andy Willock connected just 39 seconds into the game for his 8th goal of the season. Tim Richter and James Sanford were credited with the assists as the Whalers staked out a 1-0 lead. The Whalers continued to dictate the offensive flow of the game for the first half of the period as Dashers goaltender Matt Anthony was called upon to make multiple breakaway saves, stymieing Igor Karlov and James Sanford just minutes apart. As the period wound to a close, Ryan Patsch fed Ilya Solarev to spring the Kazakhstani forward on a two on one with David Lun. The Whalers doubled their lead as Lun was left alone in the slot and sent Solarev's pass through the five hole of Matt Anthony for his 15th of the year. Just over a minute later, Rob Dongara scored his 12th of the season with a move that some hockey players can only dream of by skating parallel to the net and flipping the puck over the stick of defenseman Nick Williams. The timing couldn't be better as Dongara shot the puck as it hit the ice and past the outstretched blocker of Matt Anthony to complete a three goal period for the home team.
The second period started with an abbreviated power play in favor of the Dashers as Tim Richter served the remainder of his hooking penalty that occurred with 15 seconds left in the first period. The Whalers were able to kill the penalty, only giving up one shot on goal. The expiration of the Richter penalty was a catalyst to a series of end to end rushes that forced both goalies to make strong saves. Matt Anthony stoned Igor Karlov again on back to back breakaways, giving the Dashers momentum as the period entered its final quarter. Controlling the puck behind the net, former Whaler Matt Puntureri gained control of the puck and started to drive towards the slot. He lowered his shoulder and held off two defenders before flicking a backhand over the glove of goalie Mike Brown to break the shutout and cut the deficit to two for his 16th goal in 20 games. Justin Brausen and Jamie Zaleski each received an assist. This momentum short lived, however, as the Dashers conceded another breakaway, and this time Ilya Solvarov made them pay as he fired a snapshot into the corner of the net, his 17th of the year, to restore the three goal lead and end the second period 4-1 in favor of the Danbury Whalers.
With their backs against the wall and facing elimination from the playoffs, the Danville Dashers poured as many shots on goal as they could, finally converting at the 4:51 mark as Jonathan Juliano was left unmarked as he stick handed the puck through the slot, eventually surprising Mike Brown with a backhand shot that snuck its way through Brown's pads and once again cut the Whalers lead to two. For Juliano, it was his 6th of the year for the Dashers and his 14th overall. That was the last goal Brown would concede, as Danbury clamped down defensively and force the Dashers to shots from the outside. As time ticked down on the Dashers playoff hopes, they received a gift courtesy of another Tim Richter penalty, this one with less than three minutes to go in the game. There was to be no comeback for the Dashers, as Tim Richter potted an insurance marker with 56 seconds left in the game for his league leading 5th shorthanded goal and his 25th of the season. With the loss, the Danville Dashers were officially eliminated from playoff contention, while the Danbury Whalers kept pace with the Dayton Demonz in the battle for first place. The Whalers and Demonz will face off tomorrow, Saturday March 22nd, at 7:35 at the Danbury Ice Arena.
