Whalers Edge Demonz, 5-3
DANBURY, CT -- The Danbury Whalers and Dayton Demonz faced off Saturday night for their twelfth game of the season. Five of the eleven games between these two teams this season have gone into overtime, though that was not to be the case tonight. Both teams also sported a two game winning streak entering the game, and only 4 points separating them in the standings.
The first few minutes of the game saw offensive chances from both teams. It was the Danbury Whalers who struck first off an offensive zone faceoff won by Igor Karlov. The puck was sent back to Alex Riccio on the point, who fed Tim Richter for a one timer that escaped the outstretched pad of Jeff Rose only 4:52 into the game. Richter would be involved with the second goal with under two minutes to go in the period, this time on the power play, as his shot deflected off the skate of David Lun on the edge of the crease. Scott Morongell also received an assist. That's the way the period ended, with the Dayton Demonz holding a 13 to 9 advantage in shots.
Both teams came out for the second period struggling to maintain control of the puck, with multiple icing calls on both ends of the rink. One of these icing calls against Dayton led to an offensive zone faceoff win by Ryan Patsch. The puck quickly found its way to Cody Ayers who gave a quick pass to Mike Henderson to extend the Whalers lead to three. However, after the goal the Whalers again appeared lost on the ice. This led to undisciplined play by the Whalers, and the Demonz got on the board with their second of back to back powerplays. Brian Marks took a shot from the point that was deflected by Dustin Skinner and past goaltender Mike Brown. While Brown was adamant the puck was deflected by a high stick, the power play goal stood and the Demonz cut their deficit to two. The second period also saw the first fight of the game, starting with a race to the puck behind the Dayton net between Brandon Blair and Julian Fraser. Blair took exception to the hit from Fraser and landed a haymaker before Fraser had his gloves off. As the play had already gone back into the Whalers end, Whaler defenseman Brad Norkum skated the length of the ice to challenge Blair. Both received five minutes for fighting, with Blair receiving an additional double minor for roughing. Dayton maintained their shot advantage in the period, outshooting the Whalers 18 to 15.
Back and forth action in the third period led to back and forth goals for both teams. Brad Norkum struck first for the Whalers at the 7:09 mark, finishing a two on one opportunity with Mike Henderson. Casey Mignone would respond with just under five minutes to go, with assists going to Rob Vanwynsberghe and August Aiken. The Demonz would pull goaltender Jeff Rose with a minute and a half to go, and then go on the powerplay as Julian Fraser sat for boarding. This would turn to a detriment as Cody Ayers clear from his own zone would roll all the way down the ice and into the vacated cage, extending the lead to a 5-2 advantage for the Whalers. The Demonz did not quit, however, as Jesse Felton scored on a great individual effort, falling to the ice as he tucked the puck past the leg of Mike Brown with 11.8 remaining in the game. Dayton would finish 2-8 on the powerplay and a shot advantage of 44 to 39. Tim Richter was the third star of the game with a goal and assist. Mike Henderson was the second star of the game with a goal, assist, and +2 rating, while Cody Ayers was named the first star of the game with a goal, two assists, and a +3 rating. The Whalers are back in action tomorrow, Sunday February 16th, against the Danville Dashers. Faceoff for that game has been moved to 6:35PM at the Danbury Ice Arena.
