Whalers Score Seven Times in Valentine's Day Victory
DANBURY, CT -- The Danbury Whalers and Watertown Privateers met for hockey and not chocolates this Valentine's Day at the Danbury Ice Arena. Entering the game the Whalers had a seven point lead over the Dayton Demonz for first place in the Federal Hockey league, while the Privateers were in the midst of a 6 game losing streak. The first period saw the Whalers get on the board early courtesy of an Igor Karlov goal only 2:49 into the game, assisted by Matt Caranci and Tim Richter. Richter himself would tally a goal less than two minutes later for his 16th goal and 41st point of the season, as Caranci would pick up his second assist and Harry Radovich was credited with the secondary. Rob Dongara made it a three nothing game almost four minutes later, as Caranci picked up his third assist of the period. Defenseman Scott Morongell also received an assist on the Dongara goal, his 6th of the season. Watertown refused to end the period without a goal themselves, as Dane Erickson scored what was nearly a shorthanded goal by blasting a shot over the glove of goaltender Mike Brown. Erickson's goal was officially even strength, though only a second earlier newly acquired defenseman Ryan Dolance was serving a roughing minor. The first period ended 3-1, with Danbury holding a 23-9 advantage in shots on goal.
In the second period, the Whalers picked up the offensive pressure with smooth passing and smart pinching from their defensemen. While the Whalers did not have as many shots on goal in the second, they dominated the time of possession and left Watertown with little choice but to dump the puck out of the zone and hope that icing would not be called. The Whalers scored another three goals in the second, the first from Matt Caranci at the 5:01 mark, assisted by Mike Henderson and Tim Richter. Henderson then scored his first of two goals in the game at 6:08, assisted by Ryan Patsch and Brad Norkum. His second would have assists from Cody Ayers and Scott Morongell, though it was a strong forecheck by Tim Richter that led to Henderson collecting the puck in the offensive corner and driving to the net, tucking the puck between the legs of the embattled Bryan Kalczynski. Shots on goal for the second were more even, though still 13-10 in favor of Danbury.
Up by five goals entering the third, the Whalers were content to ensure victory by keeping the puck in the Privateers end for a majority of the frame. The Privateers ran out of energy as they only had twelve skaters dressed for the game, while Danbury was able to roll a mostly full bench. Harry Radovich was the only omission on the Whalers bench, as he did not return to the game after an injury in the first period that was not disclosed. Beni Berisha cut the deficit to four with a goal 12:04 into the period, assisted by Dane Erickson and Brent Clarke. Danbury answered under five minutes later as Brad Norkum jumped into the rush and completed a pass from Tim Richter on a two on one that left Kalczynski out to dry. Credited with his fourth assist of the game was Matt Caranci, who finished with a game high five points on the evening. Tim Richter was the third star of the game with a goal and three assists, Caranci was the second star with a goal and four assists, while Mike Henderson was named the first star of the game with two goals and an assist on this Valentine's Day game. The first place Whalers will be in action again tomorrow night with a 7:35 PM faceoff against the second place Dayton Demonz.
