Whalers Edge Dayton, 3-2
Danbury CT- It's always an exciting night at the Danbury Ice Arena when the Dayton Demonz come to town. Tonight was no exception as both teams played with speed, fight and determination. There was a little bit of everything in this game and on this night, it was the Whalers making the most of their opportunities and coming away victorious over their league rivals. Tim Richter scored the game winning goal late in the third period and Mike Brown made 43 saves as the Whalers defeated the Demonz Saturday night 3-2.
The Whalers got off to a fast start in the first period thanks to the 12th goal of the season by Ryan Patsch. The Danbury forward made a nice play at the Dayton blue line by chipping the puck past the indecisive Demonz defenseman. He then skated into the slot and ripped a low wrist shot past Jeff Rose to give the Whalers the early 1-0 lead just fifty-six seconds into the game. Brad Norkum set the tone physically for Danbury as he connected on a few big open ice hits and even took a high stick to the face from Ahmed Mahfouz. Despite outshooting the Whalers 18-12 in the first period the Demonz were unable to solve Danbury goalie Mike Brown who made a number of miraculous stops to keep Dayton off the board.
The Demonz would tie the game up at one just 1:43 into the second period after Igor Karlov was assessed a double minor for slew footing. The Demonz worked the puck low in the Whalers zone and it eventually ended up on the stick of Brian Marks who buried past Brown. The goal was the 11th of the season for Marks, who came into the game as the leading defensive scorer in the FHL. Andy Willock would give the Whalers the lead back at 5:52 on one of the prettiest goals of the season for Danbury. Willock carried the puck into the offensive zone and made a tremendous move to get around the Demonz defense. From just inside the right circle Willock unleashed a wrist shot over the glove of Jeff Rose to make it 2-1 Danbury. The goal was the 6th of the season for Willock and his second in as many nights.
The Demonz would tie the game up at 8:16 of the third period courtesy of the league leading 22nd goal of the season by Ahmed Mahfouz. Anthony Battaglia made a nifty between the legs pass to the slot where Mahfouz corralled the puck and fired it past a sprawled out Mike Brown. The tie wouldn't last long as Connecticut native Tim Richter would score the game winner 1:23 seconds later thanks in part to a tremendous individual effort by Rob Dongara. Dongara took a pass from CJ DelVaglio in the neutral zone and proceeded to skate right through the Dayton defense where he made a back hand pass through the crease to Richter who tapped it home for his 9th of the season.
