Demonz Rally Back to Down Whalers in OT
Danbury, CT- No team is perfect, even the reigning Commissioner's Cup Champions. Friday night they were outplayed just a little bit by a tough Dayton Demonz squad falling 3-2 in overtime. Anthony Battaglia scored the game winner at 3:19 of OT and Matt Kinsella made 30 saves as the Whalers saw their five game win streak come to an end.
Ryan Patsch would connect for the only goal in the opening period. On a delayed penalty, the Whalers were able to carry the puck deep into the Demonz zone. Patsch was able to gain position out in front of the Demonz net and tapped home a loose puck in front for his 4th tally of the season. Despite being outshot 15 to 7 in the period, the Whalers took a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
In the second, the Demonz would strike first with a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 9:28. After Dayton's Roger Tagoona was given a 5 minute major and game misconduct of a hit on Cody Ayers, the Demonz found themselves in a long penalty kill situation. After Jonathan Juliano cleared the puck into the neutral zone Jared Hicks would outrace Brad Norkum for the loose puck and moved in alone on the Whalers goal tucking a shot between the legs of Mike Brown. The goal was Hicks's 3rd goal of the season. During the ensuing powerplay, Jesse Felten would take a hooking minor to create a 5 on 3 chance for Danbury. Just as the first penalty expired, Brad Norkum would blast home his 1st of the season from the top of the point to give the Whalers the lead back. After a couple good scoring chances were denied by Demonz goaltender Matt Kinsella, Norkum found himself wide open at the blue line. He skated in a few strides and fired it up over the glove of the netminder as the Whalers took a 2 to 1 advantage into the third.
In the third it was the Demonz who would tie the game up at two on the 5th goal of the season by August Aiken. Jesse Felten carried the puck into the Whalers zone and fed a nice pass into the slot for a wide open Aiken who beat Brown low to the glove side. Despite many chances for both teams in the third, the score would remain tied at two and require and overtime period.
In the OT it was the FHL's leading scorer Anthony Battaglia connecting on his 9th goal of the season to send the Demonz home victorious. After a shot from the point by the Whalers was blocked, Aiken led a 2 on 1 down the ice with Battaglia. Aiken waited out the sliding defender and fed a perfect pass across for Battaglia who slammed it home past Brown. The loss was the first in five games for the Whalers and first at home this season.
The Demonz outshot the Whalers 41 to 32. Mike Brown made 38 stops to take his first loss of the season. Danbury will have a chance to get back to their winning ways tomorrow night as they host the Danville Dashers to close out he homestand. Puck drop is at 7:35.
