Whalers Sweep Dashers and into First Place
Danbury,CT - The Danbury Whalers are off to a terrific start in the 2013-2014 regular season and thanks to a broken zamboni in Dayton last night, they find themselves in first place in the Federal Hockey League. Jason Pietrasiak had two goals and an assist and Mike brown made 32 saves as the Whalers defeated the Danville Dashers Saturday night 4-2.
The Whalers got off to a fast start in the first period. Jason Pietrasiak recorded his 2nd of the season on the power play at 9:41. Andrew Willock made a nice backhand pass around the Dashers defender allowing Pietrasiak to walk in and rip a wrist shot over the glove of Nick Niedert. At 12:36 of the opening frame, Pietrasiak would add his 3rd of the season and 2nd of the game to expand the Whaler lead to two. Matt Caranci carried the puck in on a 2 on 1 and made a beautiful pass across the slot around a sliding Dashers defender right onto the stick of Pietrasiak who buried it into the open net. The lead was short lived however, as the Dashers would answer with two of their own to knot things up before the first intermission. Jaime Zeleski got the Dashers on the board with his 2nd of the season on a breakaway at 17:51. Zeleski streaked down the wing and made a nice backhand to forehand move around a sprawling Mike Brown to cut the lead to one. Brent Sands would tie the game with just 5.1 seconds left in the first with his 3rd of the season. Justin Barr lead the charge down the ice, dropped a pass right onto the stick of Sands who was calling for the puck and he fired it home past Brown.
Danbury would regain their two goal lead with a couple of tallies in the second period. First it was Robert Vanwynsberghe connecting for his 4th of the season to make it 3-2. Igor Karlov broke in on a breakaway and was stopped by Nick Niedert, but the rebound was poked home by Vanwynsberghe on a backhand. Matt Caranci would make it 4-2 with his 2nd of the season at 9:55 of the second. Pietrasiak made a nice feed to Caranci, who carried the puck into the slot. His wrist shot appeared to deflect off the skate of the Dashers defender and into the goal behind Niedert.
Nick Niedert, making his third straight start against his former team, made 46 saves in the loss. Over the course of the two night series the whalers fired a total of 101 shots on the dasher's netminder. Danbury outshot Danville 50-34. The Whalers finished 1 for 4 on the powerplay, while Danville went 0 for 3.
Danbury goes on the road for two games next weekend and won't be back home until the night before Thanksgiving, November 28th.
