Demonz Team Effort Wins Game

By Robert Kirchner

(Dayton, Ohio) Tonight theDayton Demonz welcomed the1000 Islands Privateers to Hara Arena, possibly for the last time this season. If these 2 teams are to play each other this season, it will be for the Commissioners Cup. For that to happen 1000 Islands will have to get by Danbury, and the Demonz will have to beat Danville in their play-off series.

Dayton received a team effort in tonight's 5-2 win over 1000 Islands Privateers.

The first period ended in a 1-1 tie. Goals by both teams came off the rush. Jason Hill scored from the mid-slot area for the Demonz less than 2 minutes into the game. This was the result by the Demonz able break in on a 3 on 2, Chris Leveille, Jesse Felton would set-up Hill's goal, and Dayton the 1-0 lead.

The rest of the period was played relatively evenly, play going back and forth, and not too many scoring opportunities for either team.

With less than 2 minutes left in the period, Matt Maglione scored for the Privateers to tie the game.

The Privateers aware of the Demonz explosive offense, used a 1-3-1 fore-check. The Privateers placed the first forward right across the Demonz blue line; and have 3 players stringed out across the centre line, and 1 defeceman back. This passive for check was used to clog of the middle ice, thus slow the game down (and the Demonz team speed), and create Demonz turnovers. This was relatively effective as the period progressed; this enabled the Privateers to counter attack, and create offensive zone time.

The period saw many scoring chances by both teams, Privateers Bryan Kaczynski, and Demonz Tony Tabisz stood tall in the nets for both teams.

The Privateers seemed to get momentum off their goal late in the first period. Just a little over a minute into the 2nd period, the Privateers would outwork Dayton on Peter Campbell's goal for a 2-1 lead.

Things began to turn for Dayton, when goalie Tony Tabisz was able to stop a 2-0 Privateer scoring opportunity, with the Demonz on the power play. It was like the alarm clock went off, and the Demonz woke up, and played their game. In a matter of seconds, the Demonz took control of the period (and game) on back to back goals Nick Petriello's and Chris Leveille's to give Dayton a 3-2 lead half way through the period.

Dayton added to its lead, with 5 minutes to play in the period. Demonz defenceman Terry Watt took advantage of a juicy rebound, standing in the crease area, shooting a back-hander from point-blank and into the net to give the Demonz a 4-2 lead at the end of two periods of play.

Dayton would score just seconds into the final frame, on Bryan Marks' power play goal to increase Dayton's lead to 5-2. No more scoring was done in the game. Chris Leveille is credited with the game winner. But it was the effort of all Demonz players, who fought hard, and battled back to secure their 36th win of the season.

Atkinson's Big Game Bests Danville in 5-2 Danbury Win

By Tom Pauly

Danville, IL - The Danbury Whalers dominated the Danville Dashers with just 11 skaters, scoring five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory.

Kevin McCready scored back to back tallies for the Dashers to put them ahead 2-0. Just about a minute after McCready's second, the momentum swung in favor of the Whalers when Chris Atkinson buried a rebound to make it 2-1.

The second period saw the Whalers pour on the pressure after the halfway mark when Cody Ayers rifled a power play wrist shot over the shoulder of Dashers netminder Peter Dundovich to tie the game at two. Five minutes later Brett Leonard scored the eventual game winner, also on the power play. The Whalers weren't done scoring in the second period, though, as Mike Atkinson stripped the puck from the Dashers defense and buried a breakaway while short handed to make it 4-2.

The Whalers sealed the victory up just 1:14 into the third period when Chris Atkinson scored his second of the night on a rebound from a Rich Vanderhoek shot.

Dundovich made 35 saves in the loss, while Whalers goalie Mike Brown made 29 saves in the victory.
