Dayton Shutout 1000 Islands Through Solid Team Play

By Robert Kirchner

(Dayton, Ohio) With first place clinched in the Federal Hockey League, the Dayton Demonz look to play out the remaining 9 regular season games to prepare for the play-offs. The strength of the team through the regular season has come from top to bottom, coach LeFebvre has counted on team chemistry, and selfless play, and the players have delivered.

The challenge for coach LeFebvre is having the team not to let down their guard, because every team in the league will be gunning for them. Through continued hard work, accountability, and leadership, great things can be accomplished.

Tonight, the Demonz played the 2nd of back to back games against the 1000 Islands Privateers (the Demonz beat the Privateers last night by a score of 7-3). Dayton on this evening dismantled 1000 Islands 12-0, through strong team play in all 3 zones, and strong goaltending by Jeff Rose.

The Demonz proved to the Privateers why they are a strong team throughout the contest. The Demonz controlled the puck throughout the game, proving the best defense is a strong offense.

Dayton would lead at the end of the first period 4-0.

Nick Petriello opened the scoring for the Demonz on a power play goal mid-way through the 1st period. Both Petriello and Jesse Felten cycled the puck low in the Privateers zone to give Dayton a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Dayton's Ahmed Mahfouz short-hander made it 2-0. The result came off a strong fore-check from Mahfouz and Trevor Karasiewicz.

With a little over 5 minutes left in the period Jason Hill would score the first of his 2 goals in the period. From the point-blank range, the Privateers goalie never stood a chance.

Jason Hill's second goal, less than a minute later, was the result of another strong Demonz fore-check, causing a Privateer defenseman to turn the puck over over the puck deep inside 1000 Islands zone.

The 2nd period would be a nightmare for the Privateers. Dayton would lead at the end of 2 periods of play 9-0, with the Demonz scoring 5 unanswered goals in the middle frame.

Jason Hill scored a pure hat trick, early in the period making it 5-0. Brayden Metz made it 6-0 with Dayton's second short-handed goal of the game.

Dayton's 7th goal was the result of a beautiful outlet pass from Peter Cintala sending Trevor Karasiewicz in on a breakaway, and the Privateer goaltender never stood a chance against the Federal Hockey League's points leader.

The 8th and 9th goals by the Demonz were scored by defenceman Terry Watt, and Ahmed Mahfouz (2nd of the game).

Two minutes into the final period, Terry Watt scored his 2nd goal of the evening on a wrist shot from the high slot, to increase Dayton's lead to double digits, 10-0. The Demonz 11th goal of the night came off Mahfouz's hat trick. Team captain Jesse Felten's goal made it 12-0.

Tomorrow the Demonz welcome the Danville Dashers to Hara Arena, for a 4:05 start time. The game should have a play-off atmosphere to it, as the Demonz and Dashers begin play-offs against each other on March 1st.

Whalers Harpoon Dashers, 6-1

by Tom Pauly

The Danbury Whalers exacted revenge on the Danville Dashers, beating them 6-1.

Mike Atkinson got the scoring started for the Whalers less than three minutes in to the first period. Cody Ayers added another tally to make the score 2-0 just five minutes later.

The Dashers seemed to gain a bit of life on when James Gordon scored from an awkward angle to make it 2-1. But just moments later Andrew Willock put the Whalers up 3-1 with a rocket slap shot.

The second period was more of the same as Chris Atkinson scored on a nifty pass from Brett Leonard from behind the net to put the score at 4-1. Mike Atkinson netted his second of the night with under a minute to play in the frame on the power play to head in to the third period with a 5-1 lead.

The third period's lone goal came off of the stick of Brett Leonard with :37 left on the clock.

Mike Brown made 28 saves in the win for the Whalers while Justin Sand made 22 in the loss.

Whaler Note: It is with deep sadness to inform the fans of the Whalers and FHL in the passing of Mike Goffredo, father of Whaler forward John Goffredo who passed away peacefully Friday night.
