McWhinney Leads Outlaws to Shutout Victory over Bluefins, Lead Best of 5 Series, 2-0
Wayne, NJ -Nathan Oke tallied one goal and two assists, Matt Puntureri and Matt Miller each tallied goals, and Dan McWhinney made 34 saves in leading the New Jersey Outlaws to a 3-0 victory over the Cape Cod Bluefins Saturday night at the Capital One Ice Vault. The Outlaws now take a commanding two games to none lead in the best -of-5 series in the FHL Commissioners Cup Playoffs.
The first period started off with both teams methodically measuring each other in the first 10 minutes. But once the Outlaws started on their first power play did the shots start flying for both sides. But after 20 minutes of play, both McWhinney and Cape Cod's Adam Roy were more than equal to the task, with Roy turning aside 17 shots and McWhinney 11 in a scoreless stanza.
In the second period, the Outlaws finally drew first blood, but not without controversy. Cape Cod had thought they took a 1-0 lead, only to have their blast ruled off the crossbar by the officiating crew. Shortly after that, the Outlaws took their good fortune down the other end, with Matt Puntureri converting a Jason Reese pass to give New Jersey the 1-0 advantage at the 10:36. Nathan Oke also assisted on the play. But Roy stood tall after that making several big saves and keeping the margin at 1 by making 20 saves in the second.
The allimportant second goal came at the 2;13 mark of the third period. Matt Miller rushed into the Bluefin zone on the left side, and his centering pass attempt deflected off of a Cape Cod defender in front and through the pads of Roy. Oke and McWhinney earned assists on the goal that gave the home side a 2-0 advantage. Cape Cod would push hard to cut into the deficit, but McWhinney and the Outlaw defense made several key plays in preserving the two-goal edge. Finally, at 15:06, Nathan Oke put the game out of reach. He received a pass from Travis Kauffeldt in the slot and wristed one over Roy's shoulder to give New Jersey the 3-0 that would hold for the remainder of the contest. Trevor Karasiewicz also earned a helper on the goal.
The next game in the best-of-5 series will be at the Hyannis Youth Community Center in Cape Cod on Wednesday night at 7:35 pm. The game can be seen on the livesportsvideo.com. If necessary, Game 4 will be at HYCC on Thursday and Game 5 will be at the Ice Vault on Saturday night.

Aviators Force Game Three
DANBURY, Conn. -Chris Campanale scored the game-winning goal 8:32 into the third period and Jo St. Pierre stopped 44 shots as the Brooklyn Aviators defeated the Danbury Whalers 5-2 to tie their best-of-three series at one game each on Saturday night.
Campanale had three points on the night to pace the A's offense in the victory.
Devin Guy opened the scoring in game two for the Whalers in the first period, after his wrist shot from the slot beat St. Pierre high over the glove at the 11:27 mark. Down 1-0, Brooklyn continued to pepper Danbury goalie Peter Vetri with quality chances, however the FHL's Rookie of the Year stood tall turning aside all 10 shots he faced.
Campanale would tie it for Brooklyn, 1-1, with his breakaway tally 2:56 into the second period. After a dump in by the Whalers went right onto St. Pierre, Ken Trentowski hit Campanale with a home run pass at the Danbury blue line. Campanale then broke in on Vetri and lifted a backhand over the netminder's right pad. Brooklyn then capitalized on a turnover in the slot as Jason Dolgy roofed a loose puck over the right shoulder of Vetri to give the Aviators the 2-1 lead with 13:23 left in the middle frame.
Alex Goupil, though, tied the contest for Danbury - once again - on a one timer from the right wing circle with just 1:02 left in the second to set up another dramatic period.
Late in the third period, and on the power play, Jesse Felten would give the A's an extra boost with his blast from the left wing circle that got past the left arm of Vetri putting Brooklyn up 4-2. Mike Thomson added the icing on the cake, as his late tally with 2:23 left in the game put the A's up for good 5-2.
Vetri suffers his first loss despite putting aside 35 shots in the contest.
These two teams will face off tomorrow evening in the deciding game three at 5:05 PM at the Danbury Ice Arena.
The winner will move on to the FHL's Semi-Final round starting next week.

DANBURY, CT -The Brooklyn Aviators scored three times in the final period, two on the power play, to win Game 2 against the Danbury Whalers and force a deciding Game 3 in their playoff series tomorrow night at the Danbury Ice Arena. Chris Campanale tied the game in the second period on a breakaway and Jason Dolgy gave Brooklyn the lead. With 62 seconds to go, Sanford and Andrew Willock set up Alex Goupil's second goal of the postseason to tie the game at 2. Rather, Campanale beat Whalers goalie Peter Vetri five-hole to give Brooklyn the lead at 8:32 of the third period. Power play goals by Jesse Felten and Michael Thomson sealed the game for Brooklyn and forced the decider for 5:05 PM tomorrow night at the Ice Arena.

Thousand Islands Privateers Even The Score
The Privateers evened the score against the Akwasasne Warriors in the 2nd playoff gamer at home at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center Saturday Night, 9-4. Led by a host of scores from Tibor Varga, the Privateers handled the Warriors in front of a home crowd of 1070 to even the post season effort at 1-1.
While Brad Smulders started the scoring early for the Privateers, in the fisrt followed by Adam McAllister, and Miguel DeLisle, then Smuldres again, then came the onslaught from Varga, The Warriors tied in vain to match the scoring at the 1st period to no avail.
Thus the Privateers led the way through the 2nd with Vargas scoring 4 in a row for the big lead. Ahmed Mahfouz scored for the Warriors at the end of the 2nd to bring Akwasasne to an 8-2 deficit.
Martin Beauline netted twice for the Warriors in the 3rd to try to narrow the gap, but Baumgartner scored again for 1000 Islands to stretch the lead and seal the deal.
With the first round of the playoff series tied at b1 a piece, the warriors will face off against the Privateers tomorrow, Sunday March 11th at 5:05pm at the Bonnie Castle rec center in Alex Bay.
