Privateers "Robbed" by Outlaws in OT
The first game held at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center since the Privateers took management of the facility treated fans to an exciting matchup featuring the 1st place New Jersey Outlaws against 2nd place hosting 1000 Islands. The 978 fans in attendance showed strong support for the home team, despite a thrilling overtime loss to New Jersey 4-3. Both teams were coming off road losses from yesterdays games, and this weekend could tell the tale regarding the dominance in the FHL.
New Jersey got on the board first with Brett Liscomb hitting net at 4:53 (Trevor Karasiewicz, Travis Kauffeldt). Matt Miller followed suit for New Jersey on a powerplay score at 7:14 (Nathan Oke, Anthony Battaglia) for the 2-up lead. The Privateers made sure the margin was minimal as Brad Smulders netted at 9:06 (Jeremy Akeson, Brian Marks) to keep within one at the end of the 1st.
1000 Islands was the lone scorer in the 2nd, with Ryan Pearson getting one past McWhinney at 18:04 (Michael Byrd, Adam McAllister). Prior to the goal, each club worked the attacking end hard, and strong forechecking negated some fine opportunities, leaving the game tied at 2-2 entering intermission.
New Jersey broke the tie at 3:24 in the 3rd courtesy Matt Miller's second on the night (Battaglia, John Goffredo). Again testy play continued until Privateer Paul Kelly went top shelf at 8:52 on a powerplay (Smulders, Corey Laurysen) to keep it even at 3 apiece. The final minutes of the 3rd saw great opportunities for both clubs, and tremendous hockey action for the fans, although the tie remained at the end of regulation.
Kauffeldt slipped the winner past a very impressive Matt Anthony for the overtime victory at :53 (Oke).
The Privateers host the New Jersey Outlaws again on Saturday night, followed by a "Skate with the Privateers" ice session after the game. The puck drops at 7:05pm at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center in Alex Bay.

Turnovers Cost Dashers Against Bluefins
Danville, IL -
Friday night would be the second of two straight games at home for the Danville Dashers against the Cape Cod Bluefins. After dropping game one, the Dashers would be looking to avenge the prior defeat.
Cape Cod opened the Friday night contest just as they began the opening night match-up by scoring within minutes of the puck drop after a suicide pass in the defensive zone of Danville led to the scoring opportunity. Matt Harrington converted the opportunity with help from David Lun and Kevin McCready. Harrington would notch another goal just two minutes later. This time the assists were awarded to Derek Scanlon and Luke Frey. It would be the only scoring of the period as Bluefins goaltender would shutdown the Dashers through first frame. The official made his favorite call apparent as all three penalties in the first were called as hooking minors. Dashers Billy Hunt and Joe Pace were called for the illegal use of the stick, as was A.J. Tesoriero for Cape Cod.
It would be Danville's turn to get the opening period goal early in the second. Darick St. Marie found the net to cut the Cape Cod lead in half. Assists on the goal would be credited to Ky Moje and Jim Chiropoulos. Action would get chippy moments later as Kevin Hill of the Bluefins boarded a Dashers' player. Danville captain Chris Affinati would seek immediate retribution by engaging Hill in a scuffle effectively communicating his disapproval of Hill's illegal check. The Dashers were unable to convert on the the resulting powerplay opportunity. The Bluefins would regain the two-goal lead when a turnover at the Dashers' blueline would lead to a tip-in by Andrew Hutton after an assist from Matt Harrington. The late goal would mean the away team would enter the locker room with a 3-1 advantage on the scoreboard.
Ky Moje would pick up a goal to go with his assist to open the third period (assist to Darick Ste Marie. He stuffed the puck in under the netminder's leg pad before Wes Vesprini could cover the rubber disk. The one-goal deficit would be short-lived however. The Bluefins' would score a controversial shorthanded goal off the stick of Kevin McCready (assist to Steve Kelley and Kyle Granville). The puck appeared to ring off the elbow connecting the post to the crossbar and the goal-judge failed to signal goal. The official saw things differently and awarded the goal to Cape Cod. The questionable goal would not deter the Dashers' quest for a comeback. Dean Yakura would go five-hole on the Bluefin's goaltender after assists from Moje and Ste Marie. Cape Cod would go back to the two goal lead minutes later with a quick snap-shot from Brad Surdam (assist to Hutton). It would be enough as final score would show 5-3.
The regulation loss means that Danville remains win-less in 2012. There is no doubt that the two turnovers in their own zone crippled the Dashers chances of attaining victory. Danville will have the next weekend off to work on their defensive miscues before they host defending league champion Akwesasne Warriors on February 10th and 11th. Great seats are still available through the David S. Palmer Arena box office. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors/12 and under. Both games begin at 7:05 local time.
