LATE GOAL SENDS OUTLAWS PAST WHALERS 3-2

WAYNE, NJ - Anthony Battaglia's second goal of the night with 49 seconds to go gave New Jersey a 3-2 win over the Danbury Whalers at the Capitol One Ice Vault tonight. The goal came on a controversial sequence in the Whalers zone and capped a physical but mostly clean contest between two fierce rivals.

The Whalers opened scoring early in the first period as Kelly Miller toe-dragged through the crease before sliding it into the open near side. His 17th of the season, 14th as a Whaler, came from James Kirkwood and Peter Vetri at 4:14. New Jersey answered with two in the second period, as Jason Reese and Anthony Battaglia scored goals 56 seconds apart to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead. There was a brief scrum following a play in the New Jersey crease, resulting in Corey Fulton handling Matt Miller after the play. With time winding down in the second, James Kirkwood floated a pass to Martin Moucha down the far side. Moucha swung one at a sharp angle towards the net and poked the rebound past Dan McWhinney to tie the game as the second period expired. The third period was an intense battle of wits, swinging back and forth. Peter Vetri for the Whalers matched McWhinney with deft saves. As the clock ticked below one minute in regulation, Outlaws defenseman Craig Cole challenged Whalers defenseman James Sanford on the near side. Cole dislodged Sanford's stick with a hook but the refs let play continue. The puck was tipped the puck to Kevin Cooper, who found Battaglia in front to give New Jersey the game winning goal. The Whalers argued the missed call to no avail. The loss snapped the Whalers season-high five game winning streak. Danbury returns to action Saturday the 28th as they host Brooklyn at the Ice Arena. Privateer Jeremy Akeson brought the margin to 3-0 in the 3rd at 8:08 ( Brad Smulders, Byrd), while Danville got on the board as Dean Yakura found rope at 16:42 (Darick Ste Marie, Rick Tremblay) to lessen the damage 3-1. The score would hold up for the final minutes, giving 1000 Islands the win at home.
