Toronto 8 Hamilton 0
Marek Deska was in complete control for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a Friday night win over the Hamilton Cardinals. Deska pitched a complete game shutout allowing only four hits and gave the Cardinal's hitter no chance to start any kind of rally. Toronto scored its first run in the second inning and that was all Deska needed on a night when he struck out seven and walked only one. Of his 118 pitches, 75 went for strikes.
Deska is among the leaders in all the IBL pitching triple crown categories. He is tied for the league lead in wins with four, is two back in strikeouts with 36 and is fifth in ERA with 3.80.
While Deska's pitching was the story of the night, the Maple Leafs put eight runs on the board knocking Matt Martinow out of the game and saddling him with the loss. Glen Jackson, Tyler Mitchell, Raul Borjas and Jon Waltenbury each had two hits for the Maple Leafs.
Toronto improves to 11-9. The Maple Leafs next play Sunday when they host the Guelph Royals. Hamilton falls to 6-12 and next plays Saturday when they visit the Barrie Baycats.
London 5 Burlington 2
Deinys Suarez provided the London Majors with a great start against the Burlington Bandits, keeping them in the game until they were able to score four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Taylor Carr took the win in relief for the Majors pitching two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to end the game.
Rich Corrente took the loss despite a strong start for the Bandits. Corrente went eight innings and had the lead for most of the game but gave up seven hits and six walks. His pitching kept Burlington in the game despite the offence having a quiet night.
The Bandits lone offensive bright spot was Robert Tavone. Tavone hit his first home run of the season among his three hits. London's Derrik Strzalkowski and Paul Lytwynec each had two hits on the night. Lytwynec drove in two of the Major's runs.
London improves to 12-7 while Burlington falls to 3-15 on the year. The two teams battle again on Saturday in Burlington.
Kitchener 5 Brantford 2
The Kitchener Panther's Brian Oliver took the win over the Brantford Red Sox with six strong innings allowing only one earned run while striking out nine. Oliver walked three batters and allowed four hits. Tanner Nivens had three hits for the Panthers and scored a run. Mike Glinka had a pair of hits, drove in a run and scored another.
Brantford's Jamie Richmond was the losing pitcher Friday despite going eight innings and giving up only three earned runs. He struck out five, walking just two but gave up eight hits.
Kitchener, now 9-11, next plays Sunday when they host the Barrie Baycats. Brantford, 7-12 on the season, travels to Guelph Saturday to take on the Royals.
