Royals edge Leafs to solidify hold on second-place with 4-3 win

In Guelph, the Royals downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 to snap a two-game losing streak and stay one game ahead of the third-place London Majors in one of three IBL games on Saturday. The Royals are now 7-4 and 2 ½ games behind first place Barrie Baycats who were idle. Guelph jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings before the Leafs scored a single run in the fourth inning to get on the scoreboard. Guelph added the winning run in fifth before Toronto rounded out the scoring with two runs in the eighth inning. Royals starter Jason Martyn (2-1) went seven innings, giving up only four hits and five walks with three strikeouts. He was relieved by Lucas Bannon in the eighth who allowed a hit and a walk for both Toronto runs without an out, needing help from Scott Price who picked up the save with two innings of relief. Price only allowed one hit to earn his first save. Keith Kandel led Guelph at the plate with three hits. Bruce Yari also added two hits as did Pat Coughlin including a run-scoring double. Chandler McLaren had two RBI's including a sacrifice fly. Jonathan Waltenbury had two of Toronto six hits in the game. Toronto starter Adam Garner (1-1) took the loss, pitching five innings and allowed all four runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts. He was followed by Jaspreet Shergill and Justin Cicatello who finished up.

Burlington 4, Brantford 3 (10 innings)

In Burlington, the Bandits broke a five-game losing streak on the strength of Peter Bako's 10th inning single, scoring Dan Fransceschetti with the winning run in a 4-3 win. The Bandits (3-6) moved into a sixth place tie with the Hamilton Cardinals (3-6) after the Cardinals dropped their evening game in London by a 10-2 score. Brantford (3-5) remains in last place following their loss. Burlington overcame a 3-1 deficit with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game. Brad Bedford led the Bandits 13-hit attack with four hits and an RBI while Jose Torralba and Phil Dedrick added two hits each. Tim Smith had three of Brantford's eight hits. Dylan Perego (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief, going 2 1/3 innings allowing only one hit. Starter Shawn Dressler went 6 1/3 innings, allowing only one run with three walks and three strikeouts. Jason Benson started for Brantford, giving up three runs (only one earned) on eight hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Brad Soucie (0-1) took the loss in relief, going 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and one walks while striking out three.

London 10, Hamilton 2

In London, the Majors hammered Hamilton on the strength of an 11-hit attack. Cody Mombourquette had three hits and two RBI's while Byron Reichstein had two hits and four RBI's including a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put London out in front 7-2. Jon Celestino also had two hits for the Majors. Kyle Gappa had a two-run home run for Hamilton in the fourth inning while Dre Celestijn added two hits. Brett Sabourin (2-0) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing both runs on only six hits, three walks and nine strikeouts. He was followed by Jordan Skavinsky and Josh Palmer who combined for three innings and three strikeouts while allowing only two hits. Mike Gottschalk (0-1) took the loss for Hamilton. He lasted four innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits, two walks and struck out four. Matt Martinow followed, giving up three runs in three innings on four hits and one walk and one strikeout. Dustin Godden finished up the eighth inning with one strikeout.
