June 7, 2012 - International Basketball League (IBL) News Release

Barrie Baycats 12; Guelph Royals 11

In Barrie, the host Baycats trailed 11-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning but rallied to defeat the Guelph Royals 12-11 in one of two games played in the Intercounty Baseball League on Thursday night.

The Royals also led 8-2 and 9-3 at points during the game, but just couldn't stave off the home side in part due to five critical Guelph errors. The win moves the Baycats into a tie with the idle Brantford Red Sox for first place in the IBL standings.

Closer Scott Kelly earned the win for Barrie (9-4) giving up three hits and two earned runs with one strikeout over the final inning of play.

Sean Travers picked up three hits on the night, finishing with three runs batted in for the Baycats, while Ryan Spataro had a pair of hits and three RBI. Matt Logan and Jordan Lundberg each singled, doubled and added an RBI, with Logan adding two runs scored and Lundberg coming in to score three. Kyle DeGrace and Rob Recuenco singled and scored twice with Recuenco adding a pair of RBI in the win.

Bryan Boudreau took the loss, allowing two hits and four unearned runs with one walk while registering three outs.

Mirek Sharp and Sean Reilly were two of six Royals to pick up extra base hits in the game, as the each finished with a pair of singles and one double. Reilly came around to score twice while Sharp registered three runs. Kevin Treichel doubled and singled twice with two RBI and a run scored while Frankie Hare homered and drove in three runs.

Kitchener Panthers 14; Hamilton Cardinals 10

In Kitchener, the Panthers took an 11-10 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning and added three insurance runs to secure a 14-10 win over the visiting Hamilton Cardinals at Jack Couch Park.

Adam Echlin started for the Panthers (6-4) but lasted just 4 2/3 innings. Matt Vickers came on to replace Echlin and allowed two hits and two earned runs over an inning pitched with two strikeouts to claim the win. The Panthers are now just 1 ½ games back of the Red Sox and Baycats for top spot in the league standings.

Matt Betts was dealt the loss for the Cardinals (4-9), allowing four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts over three innings pitched.

Darnell Duckett had a big night at the plate for the winners, with three hits and four RBI with two runs scored. Mitch Delaney singled and homered with two runs scored and an RBI. Mat Taube singled and doubled with three RBI and a run scored while Luke Baker chipped in with a pair of singles and a double with one run scored and a run batted in. Rick Murray doubled and scored twice while driving in a pair of runs and Iggy Villalobos and Jeff Pietrazsko each singled, drove in a run and scored in the win.

Despite falling to the Panthers, the Cardinals outhit their hosts 17-13, with every member of the team registering at least one hit. Of those 17 hits, Jon Saporsantos had three, including a single, a double and a home run with one run scored and an RBI. Justin Malabanan also homered and added a single, finishing with a run scored and three RBI while Dan Jagdeo homered and scored three times.

Nate Smith had a three hit night with an RBI and a run scored while Chris Piano had a pair of hits and a run scored. Ryan Taylor singled and doubled with an RBI and a run scored while Chris Redfern had a pair of hits and a run batted in in the loss.

The Brantford Red Sox were slated to travel to Burlington to take on the Twins but that game was not played due to sub-par field conditions. The game will be rescheduled for a later date.
