The Burlington Bandits exploded with an eight-run eighth inning to propel themselves to a stunning 11-9 come-from-behind win over the Barrie Baycats in one of two games played in the Intercounty Baseball League on Saturday night.
It was the third straight loss for the fourth place Baycats (12-11), who led 9-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bandits scored twice in the fifth to cut the Barrie lead to 9-3, then came up with the big eighth inning, securing the victory and improving their record to 4-16. Although the Bandits remain in last place in the IBL, the win snapped a six game losing streak for the hosts.
Kyle Morton had a big night at the plate for the Bandits, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and two RBI, while Daniel Peake hit a grand slam in the busy eighth inning. Darryl Pui also had a three hit night with a run scored, while Ryan Clarke singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice. Phil Steer and Nick Studer singled and scored, while Studer also added an RBI. Sean Malony and Peter Bako also picked up an RBI each in the win.
Reliever Evan DiMichele earned his first win of the season, pitching 4 1/3 innings of hitless and scoreless baseball, with two walks and three strikeouts. Brian Sewell came on to pitch the ninth, allowing just one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
It was Josh Soffer who took the loss for the Baycats, allowing two hits and two earned runs with one strikeout over one complete inning.
The long ball was on display on Saturday night as the two teams combined to hit seven home runs, four belonging to the Baycats. Kevin Atkinson doubled and homered with two RBI and two runs scored, while Kyle Gilligan singled twice and homered, driving in a run and scoring twice. Kyle DeGrace singled and homered, scoring three times and adding an RBI while Jason Coker drove in two runs and scored once with a home run of his own. Matt Proctor singled and drove in a run to round out the Barrie offence.
Guelph Royals 13; Hamilton Cardinals 4
The Guelph Royals posted multiple runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to outlast the Hamilton Cardinals 13-4.
It was a back-and-forth affair which initially saw the Cardinals (9-13) jump out to an early 3-0 lead, only to see the Royals (6-14) take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. With the game tied heading into the bottom of the sixth, Guelph poured it on with four runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to come away with the convincing victory.
C.J. Fearon singled and homered, driving in four runs and scoring twice, while Chaz Pal singled and tripled, scoring once and driving in two. Josh Garton tripled with a pair of RBI, and Nick Lancisi had a pair of hits with an RBI and two runs scored. Robert Grilli had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while Justin Interisano homered, scored twice and registered an RBI.
Reliever Lucas Borges came on in the sixth inning and pitched just 1 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Reliever Mike Elwood suffered the loss for the Cardinals, allowing seven hits and nine earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts over two innings pitched.
Mike Gottschalk went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the visitors, while Zack Ranta singled and homered with an RBI and a run scored. Chris Beer, Dan Jagdeo and Justin Malabanan each doubled and drove in a run, with Beer adding a run scored. Dre Celestijn and Kyle Gappa both singled in the loss, while Jon Saporsantos singled and scored.
