Hurricanes' Okuliar Named WHL On the Run Player of the Week
November 4, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Oliver Okuliar has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending November 3, 2019.
Okuliar recorded eight points (7G-1A) in three games as the Hurricanes earned five of six points on a three-game road trip through the province of Manitoba. The productive weekend has elevated the Hurricanes to second place in the Central Division with an 11-4-0-3 record, two points behind the division-leading Edmonton Oil Kings.
After scoring in Wednesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Winnipeg ICE, Okuliar recorded back-to-back hat tricks to lift his team to an 8-2 win over the ICE Friday and a 5-2 decision against the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday. Okuliar added an assist in Friday's performance for the first four-point game of his WHL career.
Hat tricks in back-to-back games made Okuliar the first Hurricanes skater to accomplish the feat by himself since Mitch Fadden did so on January 30 and January 31, 2007.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound product of Trencin, Slovakia scoring Lethbridge's first goal in each of the three games. In addition to a pair of power-play goals, Okuliar scored a short-handed goal.
Okuliar owns the longest active goal-scoring streak in the WHL, having recorded a goal in seven consecutive games. His eight-game point streak is currently the second-longest active point steak in the WHL.
Selected by the Hurricanes with the 49th-overall selection of the 2019 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, Okuliar has recorded 24 points (15G-9A) in 18 games, including four power-play goals, two short-handed goals, and three game-winning goals. Okuliar leads the WHL with 15 goals and is tied for third in league scoring.
The Hurricanes return to action on Wednesday, November 6 (7:00 p.m. MT), playing host to the Swift Current Broncos at the ENMAX Centre in southern Alberta.
