Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, MD - The Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, lost to the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, in a 2-1 final Tuesday.
Chesapeake (18-15, 47-54) fell in the pitchers' duel as Harrisburg claimed the go-ahead run in the seventh on a fielder's choice RBI with the bases loaded.
Three Baysox made their home debuts, included left-handed starter Caden Hunter. Hunter, the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, pitched to a second straight quality start by tossing six innings and giving up six hits and two runs, just one of which was earned.
Wehiwa Aloy and Victor Figueroa also played in front of home fans at Prince George's Stadium for the first time Tuesday.
The Senators took an opening lead to lead off the second inning. Kervin Pichardo hit the first pitch he saw for a solo home run and a 1-0 advantage.
Chesapeake tied the game at one in the fourth inning with some help from Harrisburg miscues. After Thomas Sosa hustled a leadoff double, Aloy singled up the middle on a play that ended with Sosa scoring on back-to-back Senators throwing errors.
The run was charged to Senators right-handed starter Isaac Lyon (W, 5-4), who pitched to a quality start by going six and two third innings and conceding five hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts.
Harrisburg went up a run, again, in the seventh for the 2-1 final score. Hunter (L, 1-1) started the inning by giving up a pair of singles before being relieved by righty Jeisson Cabrera. Cabrera was on the bump when Johnathon Thomas grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Sam Brown from third on a throwing error.
Cabrera combined with right-handers Tyson Neighbors and Ryan Long to keep the Baysox within striking range. Although the fielder's choice Cabrera induced went to Hunter's line, Cabrera wasn't charged with a run across an inning of work. Neighbors and Long then combined to face one above the minimum while throwing scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Chesapeake trailed by the one-run deficit going into the ninth inning, but the lead stood when Harrisburg righty Sandy Gaston (S, 2) retired the Baysox in order. With two outs in the inning, Frederick Bencosme raised eyes by launching a deep fly ball to right center field, but it was caught for the game-ending out.
The Baysox continue their six-game series against the Senators by hosting a doubleheader Wednesday. Chesapeake is scheduled to start left-hander Sebastian Gongora (8-6, 3.95 ERA) against Harrisburg lefty Alex Clemmey (3-5, 3.99 ERA) in game one before the Baysox send out righty Christian Herberholz (1-2, 6.04 ERA) to oppose Senators right-hander Blake Brown (0-0, 3.18 ERA) First pitch for game one is set for 5:35 pm from Prince George's Stadium.
