Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. Dusty Hudock recorded a second straight shut-out as the Charleston Battery fought the Montreal Impact to a 0-0 tie Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,367. Both sides had chances but in the end defense held sway as both Hudock and Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan preserved clean-sheets.
In front of a boisterous opening day crowd the Battery created the first chance of the game in the 9th minute from a deep throw-in. Defender Frankie Sanfilippo picked out Dan Antoniuk at the near-post but his flick flew unchallenged across the face of goal.
Montreal gained confidence as the half wore on and came close in the 36th minute as forward Joey Gjertsen got behind his defender on the left side. Gjertsen flicked the ball across the middle but midfielder Tony Donatelli skied his shot over the bar.
In the 42nd minute midfielder Tyler Hemming won the ball with a hard tackle on David Testo. He slipped the ball through to Antoniuk who tried to bend the ball inside the far post but missed wide to the left.
After the break the game continued to open up and Montreal again forced the issue with a cross from defender Leo Dilorenzo. Striker Peter Byers met the pass but his shot flew wide.
In the 63rd minute wide midfielder Tsuyoshi Yoshitake won a free-kick 25 yards out. Yoshitake shaped to cross but then fired a shot towards the top-left corner. Matt Jordan was stranded on the other side of the goal but the ball whizzed wide.
With time running out Charleston made several attacking substitutions including replacing the tiring Dan Antoniuk with rookie forward Tom Heinemann. In the 87rth minute Heinemann found space on the right flank, he drove a cross to the back post but midfielder Ian Fuller's headed attempt was saved by a diving Matt Jordan
The Battery is home again next Friday night versus the Minnesota Thunder, kick off is set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, 971-GOAL / charlestonbattery.com).
