Hucles Named Player of the Week
June 30, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, June 30, 2003) - Boston's Angela Hucles has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending June 29, 2003. In two games, Hucles registered a goal and two assists, while leading the Breakers to a 2-1 win over New York on June 25 and a 2-2 tie with Philadelphia on June 28.
In her first game back after serving a game suspension due to a red card, Hucles connected with a free kick from Maren Meinert to score the game-winning goal in the 67th minute against New York on June 25. Meinert sent a ball into the box, which Hucles connected on for a header into the right corner of the net. The goal was her first this season.
Hucles followed up her game-winning performance with two assists in a Breakers 2-2 tie against the Charge on Saturday. In the 29th minute, Hucles notched her first assist by settling a ball at the top of the area and slipping it through two Philadelphia defenders. Breakers forward Dagny Mellgren ran onto the ball and buried it far post to tie the game at 1-1. Hucles' second assist came in the 88th minute with a pass to Breakers forward Ragnhild Gulbrandsen, who scored the tying goal. Hucles' three assists in June tied her for the WUSA lead for the month.
Hucles' 33 points (14 first place, 5 second place) defeated Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon (20 points). Others who received votes were New York's Krista Davey, San Diego's Kim Pickup, Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper and Carolina's Birgit Prinz. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
