Beat Defense on Record Pace

Published on June 30, 2003 under Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, June 30, 2003) - Allowing a WUSA-low 0.75 goal per game, the Atlanta Beat hopes to make the adage "Defense Wins Championships" come true in 2003. Following the Beat's 1-0 victory over Washington on June 28, Atlanta sits atop the WUSA standings with a 6-2-4 record for 22 points.

Atlanta features the WUSA's top scoring offense at 2.00 goals per game, but it is the Beat's defense that has many experts picking Head Coach Tom Stone's club to win Founders Cup III on August 24 in San Diego. No WUSA team has ever allowed less than 1.00 goal per game for an entire season. Philadelphia led the WUSA with a goals against average of 1.05 in 2002 and Atlanta had a WUSA-best 1.00 goals against average in 2001.

"Our goals against average is a reflection on our overall team defense," Stone said. "Also, you have to have respect for the great attacking players in this league, and our team understands that."

Atlanta's backline is traditionally one of the WUSA's best. Six players see regular action in the Beat's back four, including three-year veterans Kylie Bivens, Nancy Augustyniak, Julie Augustyniak and Sharolta Nonen. In addition, rookies Leslie Gaston (10 starts in 11 games) and Ifeoma Dieke (four starts) have made an impact in their first season. Stone feels Canadian national team standout Nonen may be having her best season.

"Sharolta and (San Diego's) Joy Fawcett are the two best center backs in the WUSA this year," Stone said. "She's really stepped it up and has been tremendous in the back."

Atlanta's defense is anchored by one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of women's soccer, Briana Scurry. In Saturday's win over Washington, Scurry earned her fourth shutout of the season and her WUSA career-best 17th clean sheet. After letting her weight rise following the 1999 Women's World Cup and not competing with the U.S. national team for nearly two years (2001-2002), Scurry's dedicated fitness regimen has her in the best shape of her career. She is a likely starter for the U.S. at this fall's FIFA Women's World Cup.

"Bri is having the best year of her career," Stone said. "Her fitness work the past two years is now colliding with the opportunity to win a WUSA title and another World Cup championship. Bri has responded to the stage she has this year. She seems to thrive in this type of environment."

A key component in the Beat's success is due to the club retaining its core group of players since the league's inception. Atlanta has a WUSA-high 11 players on the club's roster who were members of the Beat's 2001 squad. In addition, newcomers such as Maribel Dominguez (Atlanta's leading scorer), Conny Pohlers, Abby Crumpton, Gaston and Dieke have all seen significant action.

Atlanta's magic number of points to qualify for the WUSA playoffs is 18, but the Beat still has nine games remaining (including six on the road). With only five points separating Atlanta from the sixth place San Jose CyberRays, the Beat knows that every team still has a solid opportunity at making the playoffs.

"This team has no delusions," Stone added. "We know that you can go from first to worst in a span of three weeks, but our players seem to respond when it counts."

NEW YORK'S MILBRETT SNAPS HOME GOAL-SCORING DROUGHT: During Saturday's 3-3 draw against Carolina at Mitchel Athletic Complex, New York Power forward Tiffeny Milbrett became the first player in WUSA history to score 30 career goals. Milbrett's historic goal helped the U.S. national team striker end a home goal-scoring drought of 14 games, dating back to July 26, 2001. New York went 2-11-1 during Milbrett's scoreless stretch at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Milbrett had gone 1393 minutes without a goal at home.

"I am not going to lie and say that it has not been on my mind," Milbrett said after Saturday's game. "It's been ridiculous ... the weight on my shoulders. It's something that as a forward makes you so angry. I've been carrying that around for almost two years. Now it's time to get more. It feels good."

With a goal and an assist against Carolina, Milbrett moved back into the top spot in all-time WUSA scoring (she's tied with Carolina's Danielle Fotopoulos) with 30 goals and 16 assists for 76 points.

PHILADELPHIA'S PICHON LIGHTING IT UP AGAIN: Following a slow start, French national team standout Marinette Pichon is on pace to eclipse her 2001 WUSA Most Valuable Player scoring numbers after registering her third multiple-goal game of the season on June 28 in a 2-2 draw against Boston. Pichon was held scoreless in her first two games this season, but she has 10 goals and two assists in the ensuing nine matches. With five goals and one assist during the month of June (as the Charge went 2-1-2), Pichon has almost single-handedly kept Philadelphia in the playoff hunt despite a 3-6-3 record. In scoring twice in the month's finale on June 28, she reached the 50-point plateau in just 29 career games, tying New York's Tiffeny Milbrett for the fewest games needed to reach the milestone. Despite only two years of service in the WUSA, Pichon ranks fifth all-time in the WUSA with 24 career goals.

JAPAN AND MEXICO BATTLE FOR FINAL WORLD CUP SPOT JULY 5 AND 12: Atlanta Beat teammates will face each other in a battle for the final berth to the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup when Mexico takes on Japan on July 5 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City and on July 12 at National Stadium in Tokyo. Maribel Dominguez, who ranks sixth in WUSA scoring with seven goals and four assists for 18 points, left Atlanta on Sunday to join Mexico's national team. Sawa departs Atlanta today to join the Japanese national team in Mexico. Mexico will host Japan on July 5 in Mexico City and Japan will then host Mexico on July 12. The winner of the home-and-home series will determine the 16th and final berth to World Cup USA '03. Both Dominguez and Sawa are expected back for the Beat's July 16 match at Philadelphia.

STATS HIGHLIGHT CLEVER PLAY OF BOSTON'S LILLY: Boston midfielder Kristine Lilly, known for her precision style of play, is the WUSA's all-time leader in drawing fouls, and is one of the best at not committing them. Entering Thursday's game against Washington, Lilly has been fouled 35 times and been guilty of only 15 infractions (a 2.33 ratio). Lilly ranks first all-time in the WUSA in drawing 132 fouls, 12 more than Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper.

"She's putting herself in a position where she runs at people and it's difficult to defend," Boston coach Pia Sundhage said about her 31-year-old star. "You don't want to get beaten by an older woman, so you take her out."

This season, Carolina's Brigit Pinz leads the league by drawing 36 fouls and has committed 21 (1.71). Washington's Mia Hamm has the WUSA's best ratio in 2003, being whistled for only 5 while drawing 18 (3.6). Hooper has been involved in the most fouls (26), while committing 33. Friday, July 4, 2003 - Atlanta Beat at Carolina Courage - 7:00 p.m. (ET) - Fox Sports South (Carolina); (Season Series: Carolina leads 1-0-1) (All-time Series History: Carolina leads 5-1-2)

Despite sitting seventh in the WUSA standings, Carolina is only seven points back of first-place Atlanta. The Beat will be without Homare Sawa (Japan) and Maribel Dominguez (Mexico) due to World Cup Qualifying.

They Said it: "I think it will take another great defensive effort. In the last three regular season games versus Carolina, we have given up only two goals and had two shutouts. If we can continue to play well on defense, it becomes very important to have great mobility on the attack. By getting numbers forward, using all of the space on the big field up there, we'll create quality scoring chances. Hooper and Pohlers are playing very well. We'll look for them to have key roles this weekend." - Atlanta Beat Head Coach Tom Stone on what it will take to defeat the Courage at SAS Stadium.
