Brevard Blue Ducks News Release
Melbourne, Florida â Derek Howard, who coached the Blue Ducks for most of the 2003 season, is back with the team, this time as Director of Player Personnel.
"We're very pleased to have Derek back with our organization for 2004," said team owner, Mike Richman.
Howard served as an assistant coach in the Blue Ducks inaugural season in 2002 and was promoted to Head Coach in 2003. He also made the player personnel decisions.
The Blue Ducks went 6-17 under Howard, before he was replaced by Ricky Benitez toward the end of the season.
"It was tough wearing both the coach and player personnel hats at the same time last year," said Howard. "I'm glad Mr. Richman saw through the difficulties we had and recognized my commitment to the organization. I'm excited to be back and am already preparing for a great season."
The Blue Ducks will begin their third season in Brevard in April and will be returning to the Clemente Center at Florida Tech in Melbourne for their home games.
The Blue Ducks are a member of the United States Basketball League (USBL), which serves as a minor league to the NBA. In its 19-year existence, over 140 players have graduated from the USBL to the NBA. Stars such as Avery Johnson, Spud Webb, Monute Bol, Mugsy Bouges, Chris Childs, Anthony Mason and Darrell Armstrong all got their start in the USBL.
