Houston Dash News Release
PORTLAND, ORE.- The Houston Dash lost 2-1 to the Chicago Red Stars in their second game of the Thorns Spring Invitational presented by Tillamook in Portland this evening.
Forward Christen Press gave Chicago the lead in the 41st minute after she converted a penalty kick. Chicago was awarded the spot kick after forward Jen Hoy was brought down inside the box as she was making a run toward the goal.
Houston equalized in the 82nd minute after Chicago defender Taylor Comeau impeded Dash forward Melissa Henderson's run into the box. The Texas native converted the penalty for her first goal of the preseason.
Two minutes later, Press scored the game-winning goal with a shot to the near post after she controlled a cross inside the box.
This match served as a preview of the season-opening meeting between both clubs, scheduled for 1 p.m. on April 15 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Houston flirted with the opening goal in the third minute when forwards Janine Beckie and Nichelle Prince exchanged passes in the box, but Beckie's shot dinged off the crossbar for a goal kick.
Beckie forced a save in the 22nd minute when her side volley to the near post forced Chicago goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to punch the ball away at the bottom corner of the far post.
Naeher kept the game scoreless in the 39th minute when she denied Beckie inside the box. The scoring opportunity began with midfielder Andressa, who found Prince unmarked outside the box. The forward's cross found Beckie near the penalty spot but the Chicago goalkeeper was there to get a hand on the ball.
Houston almost capitalized on back-to-back corner kicks early in the second half. In the 55th minute, Kealia Ohai controlled a corner kick outside the box towards the far post and found defender Poliana, but Naeher punched away her header at the near post.
A minute later Poliana was inches away from scoring the equalizer after her shot outside the six-yard box missed the inside of the near post.
Goalkeeper Jane Campbell made her first start of the preseason for the Dash, and she denied Mary Luba in the 58th minute after Press laid off a ball outside the six-yard box.
