Charlotte Hounds News Release

The Charlotte Hounds on Saturday lost a heartbreaker to the Boston Cannons in overtime, falling 17-16 in font of 5,111 fans at Harvard Stadium in Boston, MA. Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil was named player of the game for his eight point (5g, 3a) performance, including the assist on Stephen Berger's game-winning goal.

Rabil put the Cannons on the board first, and their lead was pushed to 2-0 after Brent Adams found the back net two minutes later. Peet Poillon briefly cut the lead back to one with a rip from short range, but Mike Stone scored back-to-back goals to close the first quarter with the Cannons leading 4-1.

The second quarter was action packed, as the Hounds opened with three straight goals. Matt Danowski got the run started, Brett Schmidt ripped a 2-point goal to tie the game, and Ryan Flanagan gave the Hounds their first lead, 5-4, with 11 minutes left to play in the half. The teams traded goals - including the second of the night from each Rabil and Danowski - before the Cannons closed the quarter with two straight to take a 9-7 advantage into the half.

The Cannons kept the momentum rolling, scoring two straight at the start of the third to push their lead to 11-7. But the Hounds responded with a five goal run, started by rookie long pole Mason Poli. Danowski then added his second of the night and Ryan Young scored back-to-back before goalie Adam Ghitelman took business into his own hands and gave the Hounds a 12-11 lead heading in to the final quarter.

The lead was short lived though, as Rabil opened the fourth with two straight goals to put the Cannons back in front 13-12. The teams traded tallies before Danowski scored goal line extended to give the Hounds a 16-15 lead with 7:41 left to play in the game. But Berger - acquired by the Cannons at Monday's trade deadline - tied the game with less than two minutes to go. Ghitelman and Cannons goalie Jordan Burke both came up with big saves in the final minute to send the game to overtime.

Tim Fallon won the overtime period's opening faceoff, but the ensuing shot by Danowski went wide and possession went to the Cannons. Rabil set up the game-winning play with a beautiful feed to Berger who buried his shot to solidify the victory. The Cannons, now 5-5, take over sole possession of fourth place in the MLL standings, while the Hounds at 4-6 remain in fifth position, just outside of a playoff spot.

The Hounds on Saturday July 13 will host the 2013 MLL All-Star Game presented by Moe's Southwest Grill at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Flanagan, Schmidt, Poillon and Young will be representing the Hounds in the game, so get your tickets now ! Regular-season play will resume on July 20, when the Hounds host the Lizards (3-7) in a Saturday matinee. Tickets are still available for that game as well.
