Hooper Scores Twice in Beat's 3-1 Win Over Boston

BOSTON - The Atlanta Beat won its second straight game, with a 3-1 defeat of the Boston Breakers on Sunday night at Nickerson Field. Charmaine Hooper notched two goals and an assist, while Homare Sawa added the third goal as the Beat defeated the Breakers for the second time this season. The victory gave the Beat sole possession of second place in the WUSA standings with a 4-1-2 record and 14 points. The win snapped Boston's league record 13-game home unbeaten streak.

The Beat opened the scoring early, as Hooper notched her second goal of the season, on a strike in the 10th minute. She was fed a pass from Sawa and buried the ball into the corner of the goal, past Boston keeper Karina LeBlanc. Hooper would get her second of the game in the 33rd minute, on a feed from Maribel Dominguez.

The play was built up with a series of passes that led to a Dominguez cross from the right side. Hooper got on the end of the cross and the headed the ball hit off the underside of the crossbar before it found the back of the net.

Dagny Mellgren scored the Breakers' only goal, in the 38th minute, off a double assist from Heather Aldama and Maren Meinert.

The Beat added the third goal in the second half, as Hooper and Cindy Parlow combined to feed Sawa for her third goal of the season. The assist was the second of the season for Parlow and the fifth for Hooper, placing her in a tie for the league lead in assists.

The Beat holds sole possession of second place as the team heads to San Diego for the second meeting of the season versus the Spirit. The Spirit (3-1-3 and 12 points) sits in a 3rd place tie with the San Jose CyberRays. In the first meeting, May 10, the Beat tied the Spirit 1-1. Julie Fleeting scored the goal for San Diego and Maribel Dominguez scored for Atlanta.
