Home Run Derby Lineup Announced

July 18, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL) News Release

West Coast League president Donnie Marbut released the lineup of WCL All-Star Game Home Run Derby entrants this morning. Topping that list are WCL HR leaders Ben Polshuk of Victoria and Colorado Rockies 35th round draft pick Micheal Toglia of Wenatchee. Both have blasted 5 homers this summer and are tied for the league lead with Utah's Patrick Flynn of Bend.

Polshuk, a junior-to-be at Cal Poly, is batting .283 with 5 HR and 15 RBIs. Toglia, the pride of Gig Harbor, Washington and frosh-to-be at UCLA, is hitting .272 with 5 HR and 25 RBIs. Toglia's 25 RBIs are second to Marshall's Tommy Lane of Bend who has knocked in 31. Lane, a South all-star, is also participating in the WCL ASG HR Derby.

For the first time, this year's derby will feature a high school prospect (local to the Cowlitz County area). Zach Threlfall of Kelso HS earned a spot by winning a home run derby put on by the Black Bears on July 10th at David Story Field.

Probable Starters Set for WCL All-Star Game

North skipper Bryan Donohue of the second-half first-place Kelowna Falcons and South head coach Grady Tweit of the Cowlitz Black Bears have tabbed their West Coast League All-Star Game starting pitchers.

Donohue announced that Walla Walla's Easton Lucas of Pepperdine would start for the North tomorrow night at Lower Columbia College's David Story Field.

For the summer, Lucas is 6-1 with a 1.41 ERA over 8 starts. The sophomore-to-be has walked 10 and struck out 41 over 44.2 innings pitched. At Pepperdine, Easton made 14 appearances and 13 starts for the Waves. The frosh went 3-4 and posted a 4.58 ERA over 59 innings while striking out 45.

Tweit named Yakima Valley's Zach Draper of College of Idaho as the probable starter for the South.

Draper is 6-0 with a league-low 0.82 ERA over 9 starts for the Pippins. The lefty has tossed a league-leading 54.2 innings and struck out 46. At College of Idaho, the senior-to-be went 10-4 with a 2.30 ERA over 16 starts and 109.1 innings pitched.

The league has also added a pair of players to the South roster to take the place of Adley Rutschman and Chris Ceballos, who are both unable to play in the game. Cowlitz's Andy Armstrong (Oregon State) and Gresham's Ben Klenke (Nebraska) will replace them.
