New Orleans VooDoo News Release
The New Orleans VooDoo (2-10) get set for their lone home game in the month of June as they host the South Division rival Jacksonville Sharks Saturday night.
After winning the division last season, the Sharks (4-8) have struggled to gain traction in 2014. New Orleans last met Jacksonville in their final home game in 2013, a hard-fought 58-49 decision for the Sharks. The VooDoo will be looking for their first win over the Sharks since 2012.
New Orleans has shuffled the offense around in recent weeks, especially at the quarterback position. Newly acquired Adam Kennedy took the reins for New Orleans with injuries to Kurt Rocco and Ryan Perrilloux. He completed 20-36 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Kennedy also added a pair of touchdowns with his legs and rushed nine times for 32 yards. He used six different receivers, but his favorite target was Larry Beavers who posted his best game of 2014 with seven catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. Beavers now has 50 receptions for 655 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Quarterback R.J. Archer leads the way for Jacksonville and is fifth in the league with 3,076 yards with 63 touchdown passes. Receiver Jomo Wilson is the team's active leader with 50 catches for 645 yards and 12 touchdowns. Maurice Williams set a season high for Jacksonville with 12 receptions for 199 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Jared McGriff-Culver is ninth in the league with 108 rushing yards on 41 carries, and he has six touchdowns. The Jacksonville offense is able to dominate time of possession. The Sharks have held the ball for 401:04 (2nd AFL).
The VooDoo defense was unable to step in front of any passes against Cleveland last week, but defensive back Cameron McGlenn remains the team leader with eight interceptions (T-4th AFL). Mike Alston missed a pair of games and did not record a sack last week, but he still has nine for the year (T-5th AFL).
The Jacksonville defense also has a talented defensive back in Terrance Smith, who shares fourth place in the league with McGlenn and three others with eight interceptions. The Sharks have sacked the opposing quarterback 22 times, with Jerry Turner leading his team with 5.5 sacks.
Beavers has also been busy in the kick return game for the VooDoo and has 883 yards in that department, good enough for fifth in the league. Beavers posted a season high with 202 yards. Smith is the Sharks' leading kick return man with 408 yards.
Kickoff for Saturday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Smoothie King Center. Fans who are unable to attend can watch live via the Internet on ESPN3.com or listen live on WRNO 99.5-FM. The VooDoo wrap up a short week with a trip to Portland on June 27 and return home Monday, July 7 to host Pittsburgh.
Tickets are still available at the Smoothie King Center Box Office or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
