Chicago Rush News Release
September 15, 2005 - Chicago Rush head coach Mike Hohensee has been named to the Arena Football League's 20th season historical committee, the AFL announced today.
Hohensee is on the eight-member panel that will help honor the league's 20th season by selecting, among other things, the 20 greatest players, games, moments, teams and highlights in AFL history.
Hohensee is joined by a diverse mix of AFL personalities all with a strong knowledge of the league and its history, including Howard Balzer, a journalist who has covered the AFL since its inception; Hunkie Cooper, a former player and current assistant coach who holds the record for career all-purpose yards; Daryl Hammond, an active player who will begin his 16th season in January; Joe Kauffman, the president of ArenaFan Online; George LaFrance, a former player who won five ArenaBowl championships; Bill Niro, an AFL founder; and Gene Nudo, an Arizona Rattlers executive who's career has spanned 19 of the AFL's 20 seasons.
A natural choice for the committee, Hohensee has been involved with the AFL as either a player or a coach in each of the league's 19 previous seasons. As the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Gladiators, he threw the first touchdown pass in AFL history - a 42-yard completion to Russell Hairston on June 19, 1987, and participated in the first ArenaBowl, losing to the Denver Dynamite August 1, 1987.
After his playing career was cut short due to a neck injury, Hohensee moved into coaching, where he has spent the past 17 seasons. A head coach for 12 seasons, including the last five with the Rush, Hohensee is the third-winningest head coach in Arena Football history with 95 career victories.
