Herrera slams Patriots, 7-4

NEWARK, NJ - June 14, 2006 - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 7-4 in game two of the doubleheader Wednesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears even the series between the teams, with the fifth game to be played Thursday beginning at 7:05pm.

Bears left fielder Jose Herrera hit a grand slam, his second home run of the season, in the bottom of the second inning to give the Bears a 6-0 lead. Herrera finished the game 1-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI. Right fielder Will Pennyfeather drove in his 28th RBI of the season with a single in the top of the first inning to begin the scoring.

Somerset cut the score to 6-4 with four runs in the top of the fourth, led by a two-run home run, his seventh of the season by designated hitter Ryan Radmanovich. Radmanovich went 2-for-3 with one run scored, and two RBI.

Bears reliever Jeremy Hill (2-1) earned the victory with two scoreless relief innings allowing only one hit, while striking out two, and Joey Cole picked up his sixth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Jason Shiell (3-2) took the loss for the Patriots yielding seven runs of nine hits in five innings.

The Bears will send right-hander Pat Daneker (2-3) to the mound for his ninth start of the season, while right-hander Ben Crockett (3-2) will make his seventh start for the Patriots.
