Heroes Get Freeze At Home

April 12, 2007 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Huntington Heroes News Release

The Heroes and Erie Freeze will face off again for the second time in six days this Friday in another exciting AIFA north division matchup. Last week the Heroes (4-3) managed to hold off the Freeze (1-7) on the road. This time the game will be played on the Heroes home field and they are hoping another win starts a push towards the AIFA playoffs.

The story of the week has been QB coach turned quarterback, Dane Damron. The 35 year old Heroes signal caller turned in the best performance of the year by any Huntington QB going 22 of 34 247 yards and 5 TD's in the game at Erie and provided a spark to what was a slumping offense. "Dane is the most fierce competitor that I had ever coached in my 18 years of coaching," said head coach Garry McPeek, "so it was no surprise to me to see what he did on the field. He is the spark that we needed on offense. The offensive line has played great all year and the receivers had played well enough for us to win more games than we have."

For most of the season the Heroes had yet to put together a complete game, where both the offense and defense came to play. The game last week at Erie was a step in the right direction according to McPeek. "Great team win, we talked before the game that we have to trust each other for the next 60 minutes. Trust the guy that is playing beside you to do his job and focus on your responsibilities. I feel that we did that and as a result we played better. We still have room for improvement in all phases and that is what is exciting about this team."

The Heroes are hoping they can put together another complete performance as they host the Freeze this week. Despite their 1-7 record the Freeze are capable of playing with anyone. Evidence in that lies in the Heroes one point win last weekend. Coach McPeek expects more of the same from the Freeze this weekend, "Erie is a well coached group of players. Coach Arnold and his staff do a tremendous job of preparing for games, it will be another battle."

One player that Heroes fans may be familiar with is Erie kicker JR Cipra. Cipra played for the Canton Legends earlier in the season and is making his second trip to Big Sandy Superstore Arena this season. "J.R. is a tremendous weapon he scored 14 of their 44 points [last weekend]."

Kickoff is set for 7:30 this Friday night at Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
