Huntington Heroes News Release
Huntington, WV - Huntington's AIFL team will conclude its 3 game road trip this Saturday at Canton OH. This game has significant meaning in the AIFL post season picture. Huntington, now 7-4 and Canton at 8-4 are fighting for one of the four spots in the Northern Division playoffs.
AIFL RULES AGAINST HEROES
The American Indoor Football League, after an exhaustive review, ruled on Monday, May 22, 2006 that the Canton Legends' May 6 victory over the Huntington Heroes stands, but the Legends will be fined for violating league rules.
Canton won the game, 54-41, but Huntington was originally awarded a forfeit victory due to a Canton roster violation. Canton admitted the violation but protested that no rules are in place regarding forfeiture in that situation.
The committee's review found a "lack of a clear definition" in the rule regarding a forfeit and upheld the on field victory, but has levied an $800 fine on Canton for non-compliance of a league directive pertaining to personnel issues, specifically ineligible players via roster declaration.
"The fact that the rules did not specifically address the exact situation is an oversight," said AIFL Executive Director Gary Tufford. "The rulebook and operations manual will be reviewed and revised to make sure this type of incident does not occur in the future.
"It is unfortunate that this has resulted in a controversy and I apologize to the member clubs, fans and anyone affected by the confusion and outcome," Tufford added. "We have to make sure the integrity of the game is preserved."
Any future use of any ineligible players will result in a forfeit, Tufford added.
