ERIE, Pa. - Fred Ray accounted for all six Huntington offensive touchdowns while the Heroes defense returned two David Dinkins interceptions for touchdowns as they knocked the Erie Freeze from the undefeated ranks with a 55-33 victory Friday.
The Heroes (4-1) stunned the Freeze (5-1) by taking a 21-0 second quarter lead on Ray's touchdown passes to James Hawkins and Mark Littlejohn and a 50-yard James Branch interception return.
The Freeze closed twice to two points, the last time at 35-33 on Dinkins' 5-yarder to Darmel Whitfield with 13:59 to play. However, the Heroes scored the final 20 points to seal the upset.
In addition to his three rushing touchdowns, Ray threw for 138 yards and three scores. Brad Bates added a pick return for a score.
"It was us against the world, but our clock work helped us alot, and what else can I say about big 12 [Ray]," said Heroes coach Garry McPeek. "It was a rivalry and a big win for us and we are going to enjoy the ride back home to Huntington." Dinkins finished with 235 yards and four touchdowns - three to Whitfield, but was held to one rushing touchdown.
