Henning, Lapore, Tyrrell Return to City Islanders

January 11, 2005 - United Soccer League (USL) - Penn FC News Release

(Harrisburg, PA, January 11, 2005) – The Harrisburg City Islanders announced on Tuesday the signings of defenders Mike Henning, John Lapore, and Craig Tyrrell, all three of whom played key roles in the club’s 10-7-3 finish and playoff run in 2004.

Injuries limited Henning’s participation early in 2004, but the 30-year-old returned to start 12 of the club’s final 13 contests and finished with 1,133 minutes played (160 minutes in two playoff starts). The graduate of Randolph-Macon College played for the MISL’s Harrisburg Heat from 1998-2003 and the A-League’s Hershey Wildcats from 1998-2001.

Lapore was one of several rookies who made exceptional contributions for Harrisburg in 2004. The 22-year-old played all over the field a year ago but spent most of his time in the defensive midfield. An Achilles problem slowed him late and kept him on the sidelines for all but 23 minutes of the playoffs, but he still finished third on the team with 17 games played. Lapore is a graduate of Cedar Cliff High School and Kutztown University.

Tyrrell supplied a hard-nosed, defensive edge in the midfield and in the back a year ago. The 32-year-old native of St. Kitts was a constant presence in the lineup until he sustained an elbow injury on June 19 in Reading. He finished with 764 minutes played over 11 games (nine starts), and his aggressive style of play resulted in a team-leading six cautions.

In addition to these three, the Islanders now count nine returning players under contract for 2005: goalkeeper Dave Kern; defender Pete Shellenberger; and midfielders Mike Feniger, Steve Fisher, Derek Potteiger, and Moffat Oduor are the others. Midfielder David Schofield has also agreed to terms.

The City Islanders have also announced that a second round of open tryouts will take place on Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, at the facility formerly known as “In the Net” in Palmyra, where the club held tryouts on January 5 and 6. More information will be available as the tryouts approach.

The club will then open training camp on Tuesday, March 8, at a location to be determined.

The Harrisburg City Islanders will begin their second season in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division in Cincinnati on Saturday, April 16, and play their 2005 home opener at Skyline Sports Complex against the arch rival Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, April 23, at 7:05 p.m. For more information on the City Islanders, call 717-441-GOAL, or visit www.cityislanders.com.
