WOODBRIDGE, Va. (April 13, 2015) - The strong pitching of Matt Heidenreich and Sean Hagan proved to be the difference in Winston-Salem's 4-3 victory over Potomac on Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium.
Heidenreich (1-0) worked around an inauspicious start to his first start with the Dash (2-3) since 2012. His throwing error allowed Rafael Bautista, the leadoff hitter, to reach. Moments later, Wilmer Difo blasted a two-run bomb down the right-field line.
Christopher Bostick followed with a line shot that bounced off Heidenreich and resulted in an infield single. Bostick stole second and was headed toward third when Spencer Kieboom laced a ball to Dash shortstop Cleuluis Rondon, who snagged it and doubled up Bostick.
From there, Heidenreich settled in nicely. The former Astros farmhand did not allow another runner to pass second base, and he worked through the sixth inning. In its first go-around, the Dash's five-man rotation recorded a 1.30 earned run average (four earned runs in 27.2 innings).
Hagan entered in the seventh and retired the first eight men he faced before John Wooten launched a solo shot to right to pull the P-Nats (2-3) within a tally. However, the southpaw responded by punching out Isaac Ballou looking to lock down the Dash's first save of 2015.
Offensively, the Dash dented the scoreboard in the third thanks to three consecutive two-out singles. Trey Michalczewski sizzled the final of those three knocks into center for his third RBI of the campaign.
A wacky fifth inning pushed Winston-Salem ahead for good. Rondon kicked off the frame with a single. The next batter, speedy outfielder Keenyn Walker, laid down a perfect bunt. Potomac starter Matthew Spann (0-1) attempted to throw out Walker, but the ball sailed down the right field line, allowing Rondon to score and Walker to motor to third.
Walker scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. Adam Engel then coaxed a walk and scored the run of distinction on a Jake Peter triple, his second in as many games.
Spann, who started strongly, suffered the loss in his season debut. Out of the bullpen, Jake Johansen blanked the Dash over four innings to keep Potomac in the contest.
The Dash and Nationals continue this three-game set on Tuesday night. James Dykstra (1-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the rubber for Winston-Salem against fellow righty Nick Pivetta (0-1, 1.80 ERA). First pitch of the middle match is scheduled for 7:05, and pregame coverage begins at 6:50 on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
The home slate begins this Thursday with a jam-packed seven-game homestand at BB&T Ballpark. Thursday's opener features a Magnet Schedule giveaway, presented by Nature's Select, and a $1 Thirsty Thursday, presented by Camel City Goods. Seats are still available, and fans can purchase their tickets by calling (336) 714-2287 or visiting wsdash.com.
