Heat Win Third Straight Over Hurricane

TUCSON, ARIZ - The Arizona Heat won their third consecutive game over the Southern California Hurricane, 5-1. Celena Velasquez picked up her first career win, hurling a complete game and allowing only one run.

Velasquez came into the contest with a 0-5 record on the season, and had only started one game since June 16th. She responded by allowing just one run on six hits and fanning five. Gabby Guerrero got the start for the Hurricane and surrendered two runs in three innings while picking the loss. Shannon Anderson came on in relief and allowed three runs in the final three innings.

The Hurricane jumped out early, scoring a run in the first. Brianna Goad singled to lead off the game and came around to score on a RBI double by Ashley Herrera.

The Heat pushed ahead on the second, scoring a pair of runs. Shana Easley doubled and scored on Kristina Schmallen's triple into the right field corner. Schmallen would score when Crystal Farley grounded into a fielder's choice to put the Heat up 2-1.

With Velasquez cruising, the Heat added three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. LaDonia Hughes led off the inning with a single and scored two batters later on a single by April Valdez. Heather Scaglione would drive in the final two runs on a single to center, making the score 5-1.

Velasquez struck out the side in the top of the seventh to put the game away. The Heat improved to 16-19 on the season, sitting 2.5 games out of the final playoff spot.

April Valdez led the Heat attack with a pair of hits and a RBI. Heather Scaglione contributed a pair of RBIs and Kristina Schmallen drove in one on a triple.

Brianna Goad and Krista Colburn had two hits apiece for the Hurricane and Ashley Herrera drove in the lone run.

The Heat and Hurricanes square off again tomorrow night for the final game of the series. The game will start at 7 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
