Heat end losing streak with 6-1 win over Michigan
TUCSON, ARIZ - The Arizona Heat ended their eight game losing streak by defeating the Michigan Ice 6-1 at Hi Corbett Field. Desiree Serrano picked up her ninth win of the season and Heather Scaglione led the offense with a pair of hits and three RBIs.
Serrano made her 19th start of the season for Heat, squaring off against Janet Nagle for the Ice. Serrano was very efficient on the night, needing only 80 pitchers to hurl her 12th complete game of the season. She allowed only one run on five hits and fanned two. Nagle looked sharp early on, striking out three through the first two innings. The Heat would get to her after that, scoring six runs on ten hits in four and a third innings. Erin Brockert came on to finish out the final one and two third innings in scoreless relief.
The two starters cruised through the first two innings without facing a scoring threat. The Ice broke through on Serrano in the top of the third. Charity Butler led off with a single and after two fielder's choices, the Ice had a runner on second with two down. Becky Manson lined a single up the middle, scoring the first run of the game.
The Heat did not take long to answer, knotting the game at one apiece in the bottom of the inning. Jackie Coburn led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Crystal Farley. Coburn would then score on a sacrifice fly by Catalina Morris, but would leave the game after a collision at the plate.
Arizona was back at it in the bottom of the fourth. Kaleo Eldredge reached on a walk and April Valdez singled to give the Heat a pair of runners. Heather Scaglione and Shelly Schultz each followed with a RBI single, giving the Heat a 3-1 lead.
The scoring continued in the fifth for the Heat. Mascarenas and Eldredge began the inning with back-to-back singles and were moved up on a sac bunt by Valdez. Scaglione followed with a two-run double that would drive Nagle out of the games. Scaglione would score two batters later on a double by Farley, pushing the lead to 6-1 and ending the scoring on the night.
Scaglione led the way for the Heat, going two for three with a double and three RBIs. Autumn Champion and Crystal Farley each contributed a pair of hits. Champion stole her league leading 16th base of the season, while Catalina Morris and Toni Mascarenas each added a stolen base of their own.
Auriel Jenkins had the only multiple hit game for the Ice, finishing two for three with a double. Becky Manson drove home the lone run on a third inning single.
The Heat and Ice will be back at it tomorrow night at Hi Corbett Field for the second game of the series starting at 7 pm.
