Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks allowed season-highs in runs and hits in a 17-4 loss to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday evening at The Hangar.
The JetHawks (50-37) combined with Lake Elsinore's win at High Desert dropped Lancaster one game behind the Storm in the overall South Division standings. It's the first time the JetHawks have been out of first place since May 27.
The Quakes (47-40) put up their 17 runs on 23 hits, both season-highs for the Quakes offense as well.
Jeremy Rathjen tallied four doubles and a home run while Corey Seager hit two homers and drove in six runs.
Starter Juan Minaya (2-3) was saddled with the loss despite allowing only one run over three innings.
The Quakes began to break the game open in the fourth inning. Leo Rodriguez drove in a run with a single and Seager followed with the first of two home runs, a three-run shot, to put the Quakes up 5-0 against reliever Patrick Christensen.
Rathjen doubled in the fifth and scored on an Adam Law single. Christensen allowed three unearned runs in the sixth inning after Teoscar Hernandez dropped a fly ball in centerfield that would have been the inning's final out.
Jharel Cotton (3-5) set a season-high with 10 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win for the Quakes. He allowed two unearned runs in the seventh inning. The runs broke up Rancho Cucamonga's bid for a shutout.
Jobduan Morales drove in the runs with a double to left field to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
Jharel's brother Jamaine Cotton entered for the JetHawks in the bottom of the seventh and tossed a scoreless inning before allowing three home runs in the eight. Rathjen and Steven Proscia hit back-to-back homers to start the inning and Seager later blasted a two-run shot.
Position players Jobduan Morales and Austin Elkins pitched the ninth inning for Lancaster. Morales started the inning by walking the bases loaded before allowing a double to Rathjen and walking another hitter. Elkins retired the side but allowed a hit. Four runs scored in the inning and all were charged to Morales.
Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo home run to lead off the eighth and Jack Mayfield hit a solo shot to start the ninth for Lancaster's final two runs.
The JetHawks look for a series split on Monday night at The Hangar. Kent Emanuel will start against Tom Windle. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
