Augusta RiverHawks News Release

Augusta-GA--The Augusta RiverHawks used an explosive second period to defeat the Columbus Cottonmouths 4-2 Saturday night at the James Brown Arena.

The Augusta RiverHawks got the scoring started in the first period. The Captain Matt Auffrey led a rush down the ice after taking a pass from Chad Ziegler. Auffrey looked across to Ziegler, but instead of passing he elected to fire a snapshot on goal that eluded Cottonmouths' netminder Ian Vigier making the score 1-0

The RiverHawks opened up a two goal lead in the second period. Forward Taylor McReynolds used an impressive forecheck in the offensive zone to generate a loose puck, and slid it out front to a wide-open Kyle Watson. Watson fired it past Vigier to take a 2-0 lead.

Minutes later the RiverHawks once again used a strong forecheck to generate a goal. Auffrey pressed the issue deep in the Cottonmouths' end forcing a bad pass that was intercepted by Ian Watters. Watters walked into the slot and fired a snap-shot that beat Vigier.

Up three goals the RiverHawks let their focus slip a bit, taking some penalties which cost them. First it was Jordan Braid tallying on the power play, firing a shot from the point that went through a screen and by RiverHawks' goaltender Robby Moss.

Then with just over a minute left in the second period the Cottonmouths narrowed the lead to just a goal. Sam Bowles forced a turnover in the RiverHawks end and took it behind the net. Bowles elected to wrap it around, and found some daylight between Moss and the post, squeezing the puck in a making it a 3-2 game.

The Cottonmouths pressed hard to tie the game in the third period, but the RiverHawks and goaltender Moss shut the door on them. Forward Shawn Skelly salted the game away with less than a minute remaining firing a puck into the empty net making the final score 4-2. The Team will be back in action next Thursday on the road in Fayetteville, before returning home for two games on Friday and Saturday.
