DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Before they take to the field, the Daytona Beach Hawgs continue to take it to the community.

After an appearance Friday night at the Daytona Beach Christmas Parade, head coach Ervin Bryson and several players helped make the inaugural Charles Cherry Holiday Youth Festival held Saturday afternoon on the Bethune-Cookman College football practice field a rousing success.

Of course, the Hawgs manned the football booth, helping young aspiring quarterback tighten their spirals. They also helped judged the pound cake contact and assisted throughout the festival, which included a rock climbing wall, pony rides, various games, and performances by the Bethune-Cookman College marching band, Concert Chorale and more.

Bryson briefly greeted the crowd, sharing the podium with Mayor Yvonne Scarlett-Golden, Florida State Senator Tony Hill and College President Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed.

Saturday's festival was dedicated to the memory of Cherry, a five-time Daytona Beach City Councilman and Civil Rights activist who died of cancer November 16.

"It feels good to be a part of the community,'' Bryson said. "Watching the kids have a good time was a great thing. We hope to become more involved."

Daytona Beach begins play in the National Indoor Football League in March 2005.
