Hawgs love a parade

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Hawgs love a parade. Really. It's the walking that bites.

Even then, a three-mile walk [the return trip back to the staging area was the part we could live without] on a picture-perfect Friday through downtown Daytona Beach was an enjoyable experience for members of the National Indoor Football League team as they marched in the Daytona Beach Christmas parade.

Donning Santa Claus hats and dispensing over 20 pounds of chocolate footballs and assorted other candies to kids lining the route, the Hawgs took the street in their first full-fledged community performance.

"You can look at it from the fact that we raised awareness about the team,'' said Daytona Beach coach Ervin Bryson, who stopped along the way to answer any and all questions. "But the bottom line was that this was a lot of fun and it feels great to being a part of the community."

The Hawgs picked up support from a children's group in front of them who at one point forsook singing Christmas carols to chanting "Let's Go Hawgs" as the parade made its way down Beach Street. Many of the local players would break away and greet family and friends in the crowd.

"We're looking forward to participating in more events like these,'' Bryson said. "Next time, we're going to have to order more candy."

The Daytona Beach Hawgs open their inaugural season in March.
