Hawgs hunker down to face Kreatures Monday
April 10, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. â The opponent is definite, and so is the resolve for the Daytona Beach Hawgs as they face the Kissimmee Kreatures in a National Indoor Football League contest Monday night at the Ocean Center. Kickoff is 7:05 p.m.
Off the field, it's been a whirlwind week for the Hawgs. Due to the recent addition of the Dayton Warbirds into the National Indoor Football League, the Hawgs saw some minor schedule modifications that originally changed the opponent from the Montana Mavericks to the Miami Morays.
Then the Morays, who played at Lakeland Saturday night, pulled out of Monday's game and the Kreatures, despite also playing Saturday, have filled in.
"We're going to focus on the football game and nothing else,'' said Head Coach General Manager Ervin Bryson. "It's an important game, we're starting a three-game homestand and we need to continue the momentum we've established the past two weeks."
Daytona Beach (2-1) can stay within a game of unbeaten Miami (4-0) and pull to a fullgame ahead of Lakeland (2-2) in the Atlantic South Division. Miami defeated Lakeland 35-31 Saturday.
The Hawgs won their second game in a row last Saturday at Kissimmee, as Oscar Davenport threw three of his four touchdown passes to Robert Bailey and the Hawgs held off a late Kreature rally for a 44-38 victory.
"It was ugly at the end, but I'll take it,'' Bryson said. "Our passing game came alive and we made some great defensive plays. But just because we won the last game and Kissimmee lost Saturday (56-33) doesn't mean we can take the game lightly."
The Kreatures, coached by Central Florida football legend Marquette Smith, are 1-4.
HAWG NOTES: The Hawg defense leads the NIFL in scoring average, giving up 24.3 points per game and is second in least total yards (168.0) ... Micah Simmons leads the league in interceptions (4) and Bailey in missed field goal returns (24.7 yards a clip) and defensive lineman John Bowman is tied for the sacks lead with three .... This is Kissimmee's first road game of the season ... Jacksonville Jaguar defensive back Rashean Mathis, a former Bethune-Cookman College star, is expected to attend. Tickets are $10 ... The Daytona Beach Hawgs Gameday presented by TUI Business Machines broadcast on WSBB (1230 AM) begins at 7 p.m.
