Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Monday night was payback time for the Daytona Beach Hawgs as they avenged a season-opening loss to the Lakeland Thunderbolts with a 38-26 victory in front of 2,279 at TUI Business Machines Field at the Ocean Center.
Oscar Davenport threw for a season-high 190 yards and three touchdowns, and the Hawg defense pitched a second-half shutout that helped Daytona Beach (4-1) move into a first place tie with the Miami Morays in the National Indoor Football League's Atlantic South Division.
Brad Lee added 75 yards and two scores as the Hawgs won their fourth straight since a 35-18 setback to the Thunderbolts (2-2) back on March 19.
Lakeland (2-3) scored on its first four possessions, but the Hawgs recovered from a pair of second-quarter turnovers when Sam Smalls snagged a deflected pass with two seconds remaining in the half. Davenport hit Robert Bailey for a four-yard touchdown that sent the teams into the locker room tied at 26-26.
The Hawg defense registered turnovers on the next three Lakeland possessions to take control of the second half.
Davenport connected with Lucas Bailey on a 10-yard touchdown to put the Hawgs ahead 32-26 with 5:01 remaining in the third quarter, then two minutes later, Bobby Bass scooped up a Lakeland fumbled and returned it 26 yards to put Daytona Beach up by 12.
Daytona Beach's defense stopped Lakeland on a fourth-and-goal, then ran out the clock to preserve the victory.
Bailey finished with six catches for 86 yards, while Green was close behind with five receptions for 75 and two scores. Nick Allison had his fourth pick of the season.
